Returned to my office after a 2+ year hiatus (due to fellowship in Uganda + COVID) & found this note with my overly ambitious timeline for my first dissertation paper still on the wall. Reflecting on how HARD my 1st first-author paper was but also how much I've learned since then
Dolly Parton didn't spend her millions on vanity space travel, she's spent it putting 150 million books in the hands of children and honestly, more people should be like Dolly.
Excited to share the results of this massive effort! Active case finding for TB among people living with HIV is a critical component to reducing TB burden. And it's always lovely to work with the wonderful @leliachaisson
During COVID-19, we lost a lot of ground on TB screening. Part of why I'm so thrilled our TB number-needed-to-screen review for PLWH is now out in @TheUnion_TBLH, to galvanize renewed focus on screening. Proud to share work (started during my PhD!), now continued by amazing team.

So.
We get requests like this weekly.
We’re appreciative of them.
Genuinely.
Also; there’s 800+ of us in our dept alone.
There are thousands of health workers.
Who looked at an attacking pandemic, seized it by the throat, and said “Not today.”
We all deserve a raise. ✨
My 3rd & final dissertation aim is finally out in @PLOSONE! We found that frequency of out-of-neighborhood travel predicted latent mobility class, and that mobility was associated w/a decrease in TB risk (likely due to higher SES among mobile pops) https://t.co/g5PLjHe4dV
Our team was on @PublicHealthPod with @drJoshS providing a research update on the relationship between #obesity & related factors and #COVID19 disease severity and mortality. Our reviews of the three articles discussed are linked below.

100% this. Please stop comparing recent events in the US, including the Capitol riot and devastation in Texas, to "3rd world countries." It implies superiority and that terrible events are expected & accepted as long as they happen to poor people elsewhere

Have you heard about the #COVID19-sniffing dogs that the @MiamiHEAT are using to screen people attending games at @AAarena? Wondering how that works? You're in luck - we've reviewed an article describing the evaluation of COVID sniffing dogs. https://t.co/tTq5jUHY4N
@tpurnell1908 "You have a voice and you have an obligation to use it" - it's on us as epidemiologists to push forward discussions of the measurement and analysis of race, racism, and health disparities, even if it makes us uncomfortable

and a vocal call to reduce genomic health inequities within the field, including function, statistical methods, and sample populations. Critical not just for genetic epi but all fields to investigate sources of inequities in how we do our work
But what about genetic, not social, factors associated with race? @genandgenes explains that how people self-identify their race doesn’t actually align well w/genomic data on their historic ancestry, so be clear about why you're looking at race #EpiIDEAS#scicomm@JohnsHopkinsEPI
Do you adjust for race in regression models? We probably all have, but @DrLTDean suggests better practices: stratification, exploring effect measure modification, and reframing of interventions are better ways to investigate disparities. #EpiIDEAS@JohnsHopkinsEPI#scicomm
