[STATEMENT] The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) condemns the horrific murders of women in Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein and calls for urgent action and accountability in addressing South Africa’s Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) crisis.

While the Foundation acknowledges concerns around public safety, women cannot be expected to carry the burden of managing their own safety or surrender their basic freedom of movement.

The responsibility to secure our streets must rest squarely on the state and law enforcement. Proactive policing, intelligence-led interventions, safer public spaces and institutional accountability are essential to confronting the systemic failures that continue to place women at risk.

As a Foundation committed to justice, equality, human dignity and ethical leadership, we will not look away, and we will not remain silent while women are systematically murdered.

PIMVILLE DEMOCRACY CIRCLE | Building Stronger Communities Through Active Citizenship

Last Friday, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation hosted a dynamic Democracy Circle in Pimville, bringing community members together across generations for an important conversation on the role of ward committees and ward councillors in the lives of communities.

The discussion highlighted the importance of knowing who makes up our ward committees, how accessible they are, and how communities can work with ward councillors and committees to strengthen local participation and accountability.

For democracy to work, communities must not only know their rights — they must understand the structures through which they can participate, engage and hold local leadership accountable.

The conversation in Pimville reinforced a fundamental principle: active citizenship begins with knowing, engaging and working together to shape the communities we live in.

The engagements form part of the Foundation’s staff local government education programme, aimed at deepening understanding of the policies, priorities and leadership approaches of those seeking public office.

As a non-partisan organisation committed to deepening non-racialism, strengthening democratic participation and advancing ethical leadership, the Foundation will engage mayoral candidates and local ward councillors across the political spectrum.

WALK IN MY SHOES | Building Empathy Through Understanding

Tomorrow, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will be joining Ahmed Timol Secondary School for its Walk in My Shoes initiative — a powerful campaign that encourages young people to look beyond appearances, challenge stereotypes and build understanding across cultures.

Our Education & Training Officer, Idah Setati, will explore what it means to walk in someone else’s shoes — by looking beyond what one sees, recognising that while our cultures, identities and experiences may differ, our dignity and humanity remain the same.

Through guided conversations, a culture swap and shared experiences, learners For us, contributing to creating spaces where young people can question discrimination, embrace difference and become active citizens is an important part of strengthening a non-racial, just and equal South Africa.

30 YEARS OF SOUTH AFRICA’S CONSTITUTION

Today, South Africa marks 30 years since the adoption of our Constitution — a moment to reflect on the values that continue to shape our democracy: dignity, equality, justice and human rights.

We were honoured to join the Centre for Constitutional Values’ 30th Anniversary programme, with members of our team contributing to important conversations on the meaning and future of our constitutional democracy.

Advancing Non-Racialism Manager Rethabile Ratsomo and Youth Leadership Programme Manager Obakeng Kgatshe joined Speaker Thoko Didiza on a panel exploring: What should dignity look like in a country marking 30 years since the adoption of its new Constitution?

Our Executive Director, Neeshan Balton, participated in a panel on international solidarity, reflecting on South Africa’s role in advancing justice, human rights and solidarity beyond our borders.

These conversations remind us that the Constitution is not simply a document we commemorate. It is a living commitment to values that must continue to be defended, deepened and advanced.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMP FUNDRAISER | Support an emerging youth leader

Sometimes transformation begins when a young person is given the opportunity to step outside what they know, discover their voice and realise their potential.

At the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, our Youth Leadership Camp creates that space.

For four days, young people learn, reflect, build relationships and develop the skills to become active citizens and leaders in their communities.

For Lenette Pitso, camp was transformative. She arrived unsure of her ability to lead and left with confidence, resilience and a renewed sense of purpose.

“If I can survive camp, I can survive anything.”

She returned to her community with renewed courage and confronted the housing corruption system, eventually helping her mother secure an RDP house after 25 years of waiting.

As Chumile Khunene says:

“The AKF camps did not just give me skills. It shaped my character.”

Five years after Babita Deokaran’s assassination, justice has not yet ben served.

Yesterday, The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation joined the Deokaran family, government representatives, civil society & activists to honour Babita’s courage and demand accountability.

The Acting Minister of Police, @Prof_Cachalia , and Deputy Minister of @DeptWater & Sanitation, @JackBloomDA , were in attendance, alongside speakers from @ForDemocracySa , @OUTASA , @CourageHubSA & @move_active .

Rakesh Deokaran, Babita's brother, delivered a powerful message: authorities must apprehend the paymaster behind Babita’s assassination.

The hitmen were convicted. The masterminds remain free.
