Radical idea. @IOMGovernment should only apply interest on a student loan where that student doesn’t return to the island. I’m now paying a higher rate of tax while paying off student loan just to find out student loan payments are getting me nowhere with the interest applied.

@MickMills @breeshasdad @Kemp_Manx There is plenty of information regarding how little a UK student actually pays back of their full loan due to interest.

I argued for a maintenance grant and full tuition loan system (no grant). I would happily pay £21k fees back if I was supported with maintenance.

It’s worth while - even if they don’t return students act as ambassadors for the island. Not all investment needs a monetary return.

Education should be accessible for all. Not inaccessible due to birthplace.

@MickMills @breeshasdad @Kemp_Manx They aren’t unconditional. They are subject to vigorous scrutiny which means many deserving people fall short of support. Loans are paid back, WITH interest regardless of location.

Pretty sure IOM Gov offer a variety of support to businesses regarding apprentices.

- lack of employment opportunities (I returned home to my on island bar job immediately so I could earn)
- lack of gov funding support during uni meant I had no option but to return home and work ASAP. Staying in UK wasn’t a viable option

@MickMills @Kemp_Manx @breeshasdad In 17/18 the cost of the maintenance grant and tuition support was £9.1 million. This supported 1,378 students. Divided equally it’s approx 6.6k per student. Not enough to cover fees and/or living expenses. The encouragement to leave is the better support from UK GOV.

@breeshasdad Student engagement should hopefully be a big topic at this election - especially with a declining workforce and lack of suitable workforce on island. Keep an eye on Chambers of Commerce for election survey results that highlight key issues to businesses.
