I hope to use this course to apply better data methods and mapping practices that incorporate more participatory, qualitative methods to better understand queer life and use results for productive change in my Human Geography Research Masters at @UniofNewcastle (7)
I have just handed in my final assignment for the ‘Introducing Mapping, Spatial Data & GIS’ online University of Oxford short course, and it also coincides with the end of Pride month! I chose to map 2021 South-East Sexual Orientation Census data compared with LGBTQI+ spaces. (1)
What I found most enlightening was the inherent conflict present between accurately representing queer life and contending with the in-built need of static, fixed categories in data systems and GIS. (2)
This map, as purposeful commentary, alludes a lot of meaningful information about the complex, fluid, and messy everyday lives of queer individuals.
Specifically, I’ve highlighted a select few examples: (3)
This echoes my diss findings on dating apps - difficulties arise following a mismatch of fluid sexualities and then a rigid, binary format of the show. They’re right, it wouldn’t work given its fundamental anti-variance design to function. #LoveIslandUK
While I’m sure he’d be flattered, I reckon Turing would rather see the Government ban conversion therapy, the (currently legal) form of LGBT torture that he was subjected to before he died in 1954
@ThisisDavina@Loobylou65 What a truly ignorant statement. The point is that women (who predominantly have this fear given experience) shouldn’t have to avoid walking at night. It isn’t a witch hunt on all men, it’s a call out to reframe the argument away from it being the fault of the woman.
#bisexuality legitimated as a viable sexual identity or an othering of the non-categorised sexualities in the recent #census? I see this as largely positive. ‘Voluntary’ makes me laugh, tell that to questioning teens whose parents complete the form on their behalf
#census already facing challenges to new changes. This argument totally overlooks the fact that those whom the question targets will have the greatest understanding of the difference in sex and identity, probably a painful one at that https://t.co/vydiUrZk29
