@Menstrual_H_P at #IWD2025 event
1️⃣Young people aren’t #taught about menstrual health properly in schools, they are unprepared (ie we don’t teach the basics, we don’t talk about hygiene, we don’t talk about what a painful period is, we are setting children up to #suffer in #silence).
💬🩸“The fact that we barely touch upon menstrual health in primary #school is actually disgraceful. We’re failing young people.”
2️⃣Medical #dismissal is common.
💬🩸“We were told it was all in our heads, that it was normal, that it was just part of being a woman.”
3️⃣Those struggling with conditions like endometriosis often spend years #without a #diagnosis.
💬🩸 If we had access to the right information earlier, we would have kept advocating for ourselves and wouldn’t have #suffered for as long as we did.”
Anna & Gabz emphasised the importance of changing the narrative around menstrual health and ensuring #young #people feel #heard and empowered with knowledge and resources. They founded the Menstrual Health Project to help to tackle this by creating #educational #toolkits for young people, parents, and teachers 📚👇

And that’s a wrap for #IWD2025! 🎉Our #PublicHealth stall at #TownHall celebrating #IWD25 was buzzing with engagement! Residents learned about local services, grabbed freebies, and loved our quiz. Two lucky winners will be announced on March 10th!
@RimaDSmith at #IWD2025 event on the impact of #miscarriage and the need for routine #mental#health#screening.
💬“Miscarriage is #hidden. When a woman has a #stillbirth everyone expected her to come home with a baby. When a woman #miscarries#early sometimes even her closest family don’t know she was pregnant. That #isolation makes the #psychological #impact even worse.”
💬“#Women who’ve had a miscarriage are four times more likely to die from #suicide.”
A really excellent talk highlighting #research in this area and some interesting findings (eg lifestyle factors matter but education is lacking as for example 16% of women in their study were still smoking while trying to conceive or 60% were not taking folic acid).
She also explained the #graded #model of miscarriage #care where women receive the right level of support at the right time, rather than waiting until they’ve had three miscarriages to take action (Scotland has already committed to implementing this).

🌟@PrenatalTherapy highlights a major gap in #maternal-#fetal#medicine.
💬“We don’t do enough #research in #pregnancy, and because of that, we don’t develop #treatments for pregnancy #conditions.”💬
🌟She also highlights a shift from passive monitoring to active treatment in fetal care.
💬“If you make an early diagnosis, you can actually treat the fetus and improve the outcome for that baby.”💬

#InternationalWomensDay event with Welcome2the UK✨bringing together incredible people including @BayoAlaba MP delivered moving speech, reminding us of the power of #women in shaping #history and #communities…
💬 “Women change the world. They change thinking”
💬 “My mother changed my life by introducing me to someone who shaped my future [wife]..”
We also heard from Jennifer Tolhurst, Lord Lieutenant of Essex, who spoke about leadership and service, to Emily Vermont, CEO of @Indi Rock, sharing her journey as a woman in business. We also heard from Chief Inspector David Browning of @EssexPoliceUK, reflecting on the importance of community and safety, and enjoyed a wonderful performance from a local choir.
A highlight of the day was watching a moving video about the impact of their work. It was also fantastic to be there with @elly_charity, sharing our work on women’s #health and our health #literacy project for non-English speaking #pregnant women.
A huge thank you to Arancha, Rashida & Gemma for their support and to everyone who made the day so special. A truly inspiring celebration of the power of women!

#MuMPreDiCT#research findings on multiple long-term conditions & #pregnancy from our #Dissemination #Event on 🧬Epidemiology, 🏥Healthcare Challenges, 💊Medication & Polypharmacy & 👶LongTerm Health.
🧬#Epidemiology
🧬1 in 4 women enter pregnancy with 2+ long-term conditions, often a mix of physical and mental health conditions.
🧬Higher prevalence in deprived areas, with mental health conditions as a major contributor.
🧬🗣️"Mental health often exists alongside physical conditions, making care even more complex."
🏥#Healthcare #Challenges
🏥 Fragmented care forces women to become their own care navigators.
🏥 Postnatal care is often missing, leading to worsened long-term health outcomes.
🏥🗣️ "When I had my baby, the support stopped. I was just left to manage on my own."
💊#Medication & #Polypharmacy
💊1 in 4 pregnancies involve prescriptions for 2+ medications in the first trimester (1 in 2 women when they have multiple health conditions).
💊Many women stop essential medication due to fear and unclear advice.
💊🗣️ "We have many signals to go through. It is not possible to look at every single one in detail, but largely, the study tells us medicines 'most of them' are safe. The challenge is that #absence of #evidence #does #not #mean evidence of #no #harm."
💊🗣️ "I was so scared my medication would harm my baby, no one could give me clear answers."
👶#Beyond #Pregnancy – #LongTerm #Health
👶Pregnancy complications are early warning signs for future health risks
👶Better postnatal care, follow-up, and routine health checks are needed
👶🗣️ "There was so much focus on my baby, but no one asked how I was doing after birth."

#MuMPreDiCT Event - #Medication in #Pregnancy
▶️"When we have long-term health conditions, very often we are taking #medication, and that medication is crucial to our #health."
▶️"The reality is, when we ask our doctors, midwives, and health professionals [about medication safety during pregnancy], often they don’t know." & "That’s why this #research is so important."

Great discussions this morning as we explored 'Empowering Patient Voices in Authorship' in two parallel sessions at #ISMPPEurope. It was interesting to reflect on what enables #patient#involvement in #medical#authorship alongside @TheWoollard, @emmajdoble & Rachel Kendrick.
Some things that we spoke about...
🔹 Setting clear expectations from the start
🔹 Recognising the time commitment and providing support and choice
🔹 Helping patient authors navigate the process (including handling rejections / revisions, enabling access to papers beyond the paywall etc)
It was also fascinating to hear perspectives from journals and industry about what they are doing to support patient authorship.
A huge Thank You to Stuart Donald @KrystelisLtd for great chairing! And also to everyone who attended our sessions and asked thoughtful questions!!
