BREAKING: LOVE IT! MapQuest refused to label Lake Ontario as "Lake America" after Trump's asinine renaming stunt — and their app immediately surged to the #1 navigation app spot.

Standing up to fascists is really paying off...

“We took the same approach we did with the Gulf of Mexico: be part of the conversation, and give people an app that keeps the names they’re familiar with,” stated Doug Berger, the general manager of MapQuest. “Hundreds of thousands of people signaled to us this weekend that we got it right by downloading our app.”

The company announced on Thursday that it would not be bowing to Trump's executive order which directed the Interior Department to change the name. Once the public learned that MapQuest was drawing a line in the sand against this deeply unpopular White House, downloads for their iOS app skyrocketed. It shot up to the #4 overall position on the U.S. App Store’s Top Charts, not including video games. When video games are factored in, the app still clinched the #8 spot. In Canada’s App Store, it climbed up to #2 overall and #1 in navigation.

To add insult to MAGA injury, MapQuest also released a funny little tool that allows users to mockingly rename Lake Ontario to whatever silly name they want, and then share the image on social media. It provides people a way to troll Trump and his supporters by undermining his right to unilaterally change the name.

MapQuest's courage is especially welcome given the cowardly manner in which Google Maps immediately caved to Trump's order. That company promptly relabeled Lake Ontario to "Lake America" for users in the United States, resulting in outrage and even boycotts from formerly loyal customers. Clearly, the tech overlords at Google are more afraid of upsetting Trump than they are of alienating the American people. Now, they're paying the price for their spinelessness.

Everyone debating beef prices should hear from someone who actually raises cattle.

I’m a small rancher. It can cost me ~$2,500 to raise an animal + ~$600 to process it. If I bring home ~500 lbs of beef, that’s $6.20/lb before I pay myself ONE DOLLAR for land, fencing, equipment, fuel, labor, losses or risk.

So no, American ranchers aren’t getting rich off expensive beef.

And importing cheaper beef isn’t the solution I want.

I’d rather see Americans cut out the mega-packers and buy directly from local ranchers. Buy a quarter, half or whole animal. Know the farm. Know how it was raised. Ask whether it was grass-fed, grass-finished, grain-finished, or something else. Know who processed it.

Quality and production standards vary, and “imported” doesn't automatically mean inferior—but cheaper commodity beef is not the same proposition as knowing exactly where your food came from.

Want to help American families AND American cattlemen?

Buy local. Buy direct. Shorten the supply chain.

Then you don’t have to wonder which multinational handled your dinner—or whether tomorrow’s “beef” came from a cow, a bioreactor or a 3D printer.

Food security starts with knowing your farmer.
