To fall asleep you first have to forget where your body is.

Andrew Huberman explained that one of the key steps into sleep is losing track of body position. An old technique that circulated years ago involved slowly moving the eyes side to side, then in circles, then toward the nose while exhaling. He tried it and often woke up the next morning without remembering the transition.

A pair of researchers at MIT later built on the same idea with a sleep mask that gently stimulates the muscles behind the ears, creating the eye movements for you. Huberman said it can drop people into sleep in under six minutes. You feel a light twitch at first, adjust it, and then the eyes simply start moving on their own. He has no financial relationship with the company.

A simple physiological lever most of us never think about.

For nearly 500 years, hundreds of millions of people looked at the most famous painting of God ever made, and none of them noticed what was hiding in plain sight.

Then, in 1990, a doctor looked up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and realized that God is wrapped inside a human brain...

The painting is Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, finished around 1512. You know the image even if you don't know its name: God reaching out from the heavens, His finger almost touching Adam's, the spark of life about to leap across the gap.

But look at the shape around God, the swirling red cloak that holds Him and the angels aloft. For five centuries it was seen as just a billowing robe... but in 1990, a physician named Frank Lynn Meshberger published a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association arguing that the red shroud is something else entirely: an anatomically precise cross-section of the human brain.

Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

The outline of the cloak traces the outer curve of the brain. A fold in the fabric forms the Sylvian fissure, the deep groove that separates the brain's major lobes. The angel curled beneath God is positioned exactly where the brainstem would be, and the green scarf trailing down becomes the vertebral artery. Even the pituitary gland and the optic chiasm, where the nerves from the eyes cross, fall precisely into place.

This was not a man likely to invent such a thing by accident. Michelangelo had spent his youth secretly dissecting human corpses in a monastery in Florence, studying the body from the inside with an obsessiveness that, by one early account, exceeded that of professional anatomists...

So what did he mean by it?

Meshberger argued that the painting has been misnamed. He suggested it should be called not the Creation of Adam, but the Endowment of Adam. In the Bible, God gives Adam life. But in Michelangelo's fresco, Adam is already alive, his eyes open, his body lifted. What God is reaching across that famous gap to give him is not life. It is intellect. The divine spark of human thought itself, delivered, fittingly, from inside the very organ that produces it.

One of the most looked-at images in the history of the world may contain a message that took half a millennium to be read, hidden by a man who understood both the human body and the human soul better than almost anyone who has ever lived, and who seems to have decided to bury his deepest idea about us where only the most careful eye would ever find it...

A civil engineer spotted a promotion on a pudding cup. He did the math in his head. Then he spent $3,140 buying 12,150 cups of chocolate pudding and walked away with 1.25 MILLION airline miles.

– David Phillips was a civil engineer at UC Davis in 1999 when he walked down the frozen food aisle of his local grocery store.

– He spotted a Healthy Choice promotion on the shelf.

– Buy 10 products, mail in the barcodes, get 1,000 airline miles.

– Early-bird bonus if you mailed them before June 1st, the rate doubled to 1,000 miles per 5 barcodes.

– He did the math. At $2 per frozen meal the deal was decent. Then he wandered to the next aisle.

– Individual Healthy Choice chocolate pudding cups. 25 cents each. Each cup had its own barcode. The promotion didn't specify meal size.

– He went home and built a spreadsheet.

– Then he drove to the bank, withdrew cash, and told his wife they needed to buy as much pudding as they possibly could.

– He emptied every Grocery Outlet in the Sacramento Valley. Ten stores in total. 12,150 individual pudding cups.

– Total spent: $3,140.

– There was one problem. Each cup needed its barcode cut out and mailed in before the June 1st deadline. There were 12,150 of them. He couldn't do it alone.

– He drove to the local Salvation Army and made a deal. Volunteers would cut out every barcode. In exchange he would donate all 12,150 cups of pudding to their soup kitchen.

– They agreed.

– He mailed the barcodes. Then waited.

– Then large packages started arriving from Healthy Choice. Then more packages. Then more.

– In total: 2,506 certificates, each worth 500 miles.

– 1,253,000 airline miles. Enough for 31 round trips to Europe.

– Healthy Choice never tried to fight it. The promotion said any product. The pudding was a product. He followed every rule exactly as written.

– He also claimed an $815 tax deduction for donating the pudding.

– American Airlines gave him lifetime Gold status for crossing one million miles on their program.

– His story became famous enough that Adam Sandler based his character in the 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love directly on him.

– He has since used the miles to take his family to 43 countries across the world.

A civil engineer found a promotion on a 25 cent pudding cup, bought 12,150 of them, donated all the pudding to the Salvation Army, and walked away with 1.25 MILLION airline miles. The company honored every single one.
