Narcissists believe what they think of you or how they choose to perceive you actually defines who you are.
Like their internal image of you is you, and the real you is the intruder.
Their sheer arrogance behind this borders on delusion.

When they decide you’re worthless, contemptible, crazy — they’re not describing you. They’re declaring you. Issuing a verdict they expect reality to honor.

And it explains the rage when you don’t collapse into the identity they’ve assigned. You’re not just disagreeing with them. You’re violating the rules of a universe where their perception has the force of law.

It also explains why smear campaigns aren’t just revenge — they’re enforcement. If they can get enough people to perceive you the way they do, the perception gains mass. It starts to function like reality. Third-party validation is how they try to make their internal verdict stick.

The deepest version of this is probably the grandiose self-image — they hold that one in place through force of will too. The same mechanism that lets them declare you worthless lets them declare themselves exceptional. It’s not confidence. It’s insistence. The belief that what they need to be true becomes true because they need it to.

You’re essentially dealing with someone who has never fully accepted that other people are real, separate, and self-defining. You exist in relation to their perception — or you don’t exist meaningfully at all.
