Thoughts after reading "Robotics & The Age of Physical AI" by @0xPrismatic

LLMs thrive on decades of internet text and images, enabling human-level language and visual understanding. Robotics, however, lacks such data. Robots need labeled visual data and poses, but current datasets are millions of times smaller than those for LLMs.

Crowdsourcing

Collecting data this way adds noise and reduces lab-specific bias, forcing models to learn task fundamentals rather than environmental quirks.

Teleoperation

It will help with data collection, but more importantly it will open new jobs and markets for training and certification. Though this will come with its own regulations for labor and privacy challenges.

Crypto

Can scale data collection by paying operators to tele-drive robots or use motion capture suits with incentives like "[task]-to-earn".

However, these are low-hanging fruits and will lose steam as token rewards taper and new methods make training more sample-efficient.

Beyond incentives, crypto provides immutable action logs, crucial for insurance claims and accountability when stakes are high.

Video

At the moment it's not ideal for training since it misses joint-level details like kinematics or force needed to learn physical interactions.

But new methods, like single-shot video imitation, are reducing this gap and opening the doors to petabytes of data on YouTube.

World Models

Like LLMs learned language, "physical-AI" models will grasp how actions shape the world. Models like Meta's V-JEPA use video and robot data to predict outcomes, like a ball's trajectory when kicked. These general models, lightly fine-tuned, will outshine rigid, hand-coded policies, enabling adaptable robots.

Robots as Smart Devices

With general models fine-tuned for tasks via downloadable "skill packs," robots could become like smartphones or PCs. Open-source, 3D-printed robots allow cheap customization, breaking free from humanoid designs. Multi-arm or specialized bots can tackle niche tasks, built and trained in days.

The Automation Loop

Robotics is automation's next wave, enabled by this cycle: problem → print → train → deploy.

With 3D printing and modular skills, anyone can design and deploy custom robots, mirroring software development's speed.
