DAMN. Ron DeSantis just signed a bill requiring schools teach Asian American Pacific Islander history in K-12.
Great, but it's just one day after he BANNED colleges from teaching about systemic racism.🤦♂️
Here's proof you can't teach AAPI history w/out teaching systemic racism: I was born in a refugee camp in Arkansas for those like my parents and siblings – Vietnamese people who had to flee their war-torn country.
My family was called chinks. We were told to go back to our country. But I focused on the love and the passion surrounding us to make a better life.
I eventually graduated from Harvard. I made it into an elite business firm.
But there, I was held back by racism. I was admonished for privately complaining about an awful client. What happened to my white colleagues who said way worse about the same client? They got promoted.
Now that I'm a co-owner of a political ad agency, I am proud to have just been named the first person of color to serve as president of the American Association of Political Consultants. And there are so many "first person of color" stories coming out right now.
So why did it take this long? Because Americans are evil? No. Because systemic racism EXISTS, and good people are waking up and working TOGETHER to tear it down. THIS is the beauty that should be taught.
The true evil is the preservation of the racist system, which is only possible when people like DeSantis make it illegal for teachers to tell the FULL story of people like me.
Fight for the right to tell the truth.
