Detail from inside the gutting of the Washington Post:
300 journalists or so will be fired this AM at 8:30 AM (right now…).
They’ll be cut off from newsroom computer access at 9 AM.
Word got out about this yesterday afternoon.
Dozens of reporters & journalists worked late last night & early this AM to finish stories they had in process before being shut out.
That’s who works at the Post. No surprise.
<I interviewed these people — this is a good, valuable story. Let me just get it done…before I lose my job & worry about how to pay my rent.>
One last story.

The Washington Post has been not just a great newspaper, but a critical force in American conversation and life.
Those of use who love the city of Washington know how much we have needed the Post.
What is happening there today is gutting. Thinking of all the friends I love and admire there.
Political violence is always immoral and always counterproductive for a healthy democracy. It solves nothing. It only leads to further violence and ultimately enables scapegoating of vulnerable communities. Committing acts of violence against those who disagree with us helps no one.
BREAKING: Four journalists, including a freelancer who worked with AP, are among eight killed by an Israeli strike on southern Gaza's Nasser Hospital. https://t.co/F2U4K6ZOfh
More from the log: "The U.S. government no longer has the tools or personnel to respond when our global neighbors request assistance... The U.S. is now left without the systems, experienced personnel, and partners necessary to responsibly and strategically implement foreign assistance—making the U.S. weaker, less safe, and less prosperous."
🌍 People in the world’s most vulnerable places can't wait to adapt to #ClimateChange.
At #COP29, we're launching a set of Common Principles for Effective Climate Finance and Action for Relief, Recovery, and Peace alongside @FCDOGovUK, @SwissMFA, @ifrc, @SFCG_ and 30+ others.
Impressed by @mercycorps climate resilient approach in Turkana, Kenya. They are reaching populations at scale through integrated activities like drylands rehabilitation, climate-proofing of water systems, and improved governance, helping people withstand increased climate shocks.
International support for Sudan continues falling short while famine conditions worsen & aid organizations are stymied trying to reach those in greatest need. At today’s Ministerial side event at #UNGA, we must see action, not words, to turn the tide of suffering for millions.
On Ukraine, @realDonaldTrump claims the US has spent "$250 billion" because the Biden Administration "doesn't ask Europe" to pay.
In terms of military assistance to Ukraine, US officials say the US has send $50 billion+, Europe has spent about the same.
My colleague in Rafah said today that she woke her 6-month-old baby up in the middle of the night to play. With the heavy bombardment, she thought it would be their last night alive: "If this would be my last night at least I got the chance to hug my daughter for the last time."
#Rafah: Our main warehouse is now inaccessible. No aid has entered from southern crossings in 2 days. Thousands of ppl are on the move. Only 1 bakery is still working. Supplies of food & fuel in #Gaza will only last 1-3 days. Without them, our operations will go into standstill.
Pleased to see US lawmakers pass nearly $10 billion in additional humanitarian and food assistance funding, essential for saving lives in conflict-driven crises. This injection of emergency resources is vital in places like Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine. https://t.co/oKlG6to6Lv
