#OTD in 1890, Józefa Fuks (Fuchsówna) was born. Let me tell you all about this badass woman.....
She grew up in Stanisławów (now in modern-day Ukraine). After graduating high school, she worked in the Municipal Savings Bank.
In 1913, she joined the Riflemen's Association, a paramilitary organisation that was one of the pretexts to Piłsudski's Legions. They trained soldiers, and Józefa also underwent some training herself.
Józefa joined the Polish Women's League when the First World War broke out. This organisation was created in 1913, but during the FWW, one of the tasks that they carried out was aiding the soldiers of Piłsudski's Legions, especially those who were wounded or taken prisoner. She was also a member of 2 other committees at this time. She did all she could to help those fighting on the front lines.
The oath crisis happened in 1917 when the Polish troops refused to swear an oath to the German Emperor Wilhelm II. It was about this time that Józefa joined the Polish Military Organization (POW). Most of the leadership had been arrested at this point. So, the organisation began to fight for an independent Poland.
She was arrested in 1918 for helping Polish Legionnaires escape internment camps and imprisoned, but she was released in October of the same year.
After Poland's independence, border disputes broke out, including one with the Ukrainian People's Republic. Józefa was still working for the POW, and she was arrested, imprisoned and then sentenced to death. But it was never carried out because a Ukrainian-Polish alliance was signed, and she was released.
During the interwar period, she devoted herself to social work. In 1935, she ran for the parliamentary elections but did not win.
In September 1939, Poland was first invaded by the Germans and then the Soviets 17 days later. Józefa was one of many women arrested and imprisoned.
She was arrested in May 1940, and shortly after, she was murdered in what is known as the Katyń Massacre—the murder of 22,000 Polish officers and intelligentsia.

@PrimeVideo therefore can I request that this symbol is removed from the thumbnail. Not all WWII films are "just about the Nazis". In fact, the Soviet Union was in collaboration with the Nazis between 1939-41 as a result of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact. Please correct this ASAP.
@PrimeVideo Recently saw @PiotrSzkopiak 's excellent film "The Last Witness" being shown on Amazon Prime but I am dumbfounded as to why a Nazi flag has been added to the film thumbnail when the plot in this film has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Nazis?
and an affront to all the victims and their families who suffered with having to keep silent for nearly half a century. Katyn is still claimed by some in Russia to have been committed by the Nazis despite the facts being well established. This plays right into their hands.
@KancelariaSejmu has designated 2025 as the year to honour, amongst others, the Polish heroes buried in Katyn, Mednoe, Kharkiv, Bykivnia and other sites who were murdered by the Soviet NKVD in April-May 1940 under the order of 5th March 1940 signed by the Politburo.

@WW2girl1944@solvzla Here is a list of the 54 known female victims of the Katyń Massacre. I am sure there are more listed on the Belarusian list but it has never been published by either Minsk or Moscow.
The graves were uncovered by the advancing Germans (after they attacked the USSR in 1941) and Soviets quickly blamed this crime on them.
It remained the official version after WW2, while the truth was suppressed by the communist regime of Poland.
In the next two months, NKVD would murder almost 22,000 Polish POWs in Katyn, Kalinin, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Minsk and other places.
The bodies of the victims were buried in mass graves.
Bronisław Radziejowski was a 🇵🇱officer and #PolishSovietWar hero. As a result, he was among 18,000 Polish officers ruthlessly executed by the Soviets in the #Katyn Forest in spring 1940. The Soviets would never forget those who dared to oppose their ‘vision’ of the world. #KatynMassacre
#TegoDnia 1940 r. #NKWD rozpoczęło likwidację obozu w Kozielsku, a wkrótce – obozów w Ostaszkowie (4 kwietnia) i Starobielsku (5 kwietnia).
🟥 Blisko 22 tys. Polaków zamordowano w kolejnych dniach strzałem w tył głowy ❗️

The Soviets began the #KatynMassacre in early April 1940. Over a few weeks, they murdered almost 22,000 Polish citizens, including army officers and NCOs, border guards, policemen, intellectuals and political prisoners.
Ryszard Kalpas was one of its first victims.

When I'm feeling lost or unsure of things, I come here to reflect and pay my respects to all those murdered so cruelly by the Soviet NKVD. Russia might try to erase your memory but they will not succeed. #Katyń#zbrodniakatynska#KatynMassacre
Signed up to listen to Second World War through Anglo-Polish eyes event online but not received a link with tickets. Can you help @posklondon@SilenceInPolish@ww2finesthour ?
Mimo że ukrywał się pod zmienionym nazwiskiem - zapewne dopadły Go długie ręce NKWD.
W Jego samobójstwo - jak chcieliby Brytyjczycy - w życiu nie uwierzę!
Iwan Kriwoziercew - zapamiętajcie to nazwisko!
Nazwisko Rosjanina - nie człowieka radzieckiego.
Ignoranci Amerykanie - widząc Rosjanina - chcieli Go przekazać ZSRR.
Uciekł i dotarł do Polaków we Włoszech.
I tu znów złożył bardzo obszerne zeznania, dotyczące zbrodni katyńskiej.
Razem z Polakami przedostał się do Wielkiej Brytanii.
