Yesterday I talked about the gap between unemployment and disability. Today I want to talk about another gap: the cost of simply trying to live.

Minimum wage and wages have increased in many places, but the cost of housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, and childcare has climbed too. For many working families, earning more doesn’t automatically mean getting ahead.

My daughter’s experience really drove this home. After applying for SNAP, she qualified for just $24 a month. That was her situation under the eligibility rules, but it illustrates how many people can still struggle even when they’re working and trying to do everything right.

A full-time job should provide a realistic path to stability—not leave people choosing between groceries, rent, or keeping the lights on.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about asking how we can build a system where hard work gives people a genuine opportunity to succeed.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective. Regardless of how people think the programs should work, I think we can agree there shouldn’t be a gap where someone is under a doctor’s care, actively trying to recover and return to work, yet still struggles to keep a roof over their family’s head. I hope conversations like this lead to constructive solutions.

Sometimes I wonder who our system is really designed to help.

Imagine working for nearly 20 years, paying taxes, building a career, and doing everything you’re supposed to do. Then you get sick.

Your doctor says you aren’t ready to return to full duty. You request temporary accommodations. They’re denied. You lose your job.

Now you’re caught between systems. You’re still under a doctor’s care, your employer has let you go, and you’re filing appeal after appeal just trying to keep a roof over your family’s head while searching for work you can safely do.

Meanwhile, the mortgage is due. The bills don’t stop. Your retirement savings are taxed if you try to survive on them. Your children are helping pay your bills.

People don’t expect to get rich from unemployment or disability. They expect a temporary safety net while they recover and work toward getting back on their feet.

We can disagree on policy, but surely we can agree that people who have worked hard, paid into the system, and become temporarily ill shouldn’t be pushed to the brink of losing everything.

How do we fix the gap between FMLA, ADA accommodations, disability, and unemployment so people recovering from illness don’t lose everything?
