Out now! From 2000-2019, 200,643 children were married across 41 states and DC. Rates of child marriage have declined steeply since the year 2000, but child marriage continues to happen in states where it remains legal.

Patterns in the US mirror those seen across the globe: >75% of those who married as children were girls in every state. Girls married men who were an avg. of 4 years older than them, while boys married women who were an avg. of 1.3 years older.
Some thoughts, clarifications, and context on my new article with @PLOSGPH. The first piece in a series on what global health is and what it means to change it, I trace how Global Health is "capturing" and depoliticizing the idea of decolonization 1/

I’m very excited to share that this paper is now out in the world. Our results highlight the blurred legal and conceptual boundaries between child marriage and sexual violence in the U.S. With @mirandalili18 and Alissa Koski in @JAdolesHealth. https://t.co/hyrDDyuzfx
Joan Didion…was an answer to the recession of poise and intellect from our lives. Polish, exactitude, remove: of these she made an atelier. Novelty and anomaly, too, were at her disposal, never far off. She was the West’s reluctant First Lady, armed with charm and bizarre acuity
“Individualism couldn’t beat Delta, it won’t beat Omicron, and it won’t beat the rest of the Greek alphabet to come. Self-interest is self-defeating, and as long as its hosts ignore that lesson, the virus will keep teaching it.”
“But isn’t Omicron milder?” 4 reasons for caution.
▶️Might simply be that it has mostly infected young people w/ some immunity.
▶️“Mild” infections can -> long COVID.
▶️Extreme transmissibility trumps reduced virulence.

🚨I wrote about public health’s history; why it spent the 20thC moving away from broad coalitions, political advocacy, and a crusading spirit that actively pushed for social reforms; and why it must regain those things to be relevant and effective. 1/ https://t.co/RRkGO83IdG
Countries with fewer deaths than expected are often distinguished by high levels of political cohesiveness, social trust, income equality and collectivism, like New Zealand, Taiwan, Norway, Iceland, Japan, Singapore and Denmark, writes Jay S. Kaufman. https://t.co/3VAldAz1Vl
Mcgill's refusal to mandate vaccines is emblematic of a double standard that excuses vaccine hesitancy but stigmatizes disability
They require significant & intrusive "proof" of disability to obtain the minimal academic accommodations
But proof of vaccination is too invasive?

Vaccine safety: We compared excess adverse events after #COVID19 vaccination (Pfizer-BioNTech) and after documented #SARSCoV2 infection.

Take-home message: Low excess risk of adverse events after vaccination, higher after infection.
