As a norwegian, I'm so proud of how far norwegian football has come in the past few years.

We were in the absolute dark ages for so long, being left behind by absolutely everyone else.

Now we have Bodø/Glimt who is a mainstay in european competitions. A Europa League semi-final, extra-time away from the UCL quarter-finals last season and in the UCL again this season.

We have the captain of the Premier League champions.

We have the best striker in the world and arguably the biggest profile in world football at the moment. A potential Ballon d'Or winner.

It’s unfortunate that we still have to educate adults on the difference between confraternities and cult groups in 2026. But here we are.

Wole Soyinka did not give Nigeria cultism. Your politicians in the 1980s did.

In 1952, Soyinka and six other students (the Magnificent Seven) formed the Pyrates Confraternity at University College Ibadan. Their goal was clear and progressive: to rebel against elitism, tribalism, colonial attitudes, and class pretensions on campus. It was an intellectual and social rebellion, pirate-themed fun, anti-conformist swagger, and a stand against pretentious middle-class students mimicking colonial masters. There were no guns, no occult rituals, no violence, just idealism in the dying days of colonial rule.

For nearly two decades, the Pyrates remained the only such group on Nigerian campuses. Non-violent, but focused on human rights and social justice.

The violent “cultism” we know today… the killings, rival gangs, rituals, campus terrorism, and destruction, is not what Soyinka started. That nightmare evolved later.

A split in the late 1960s/early 1970s created groups like the Buccaneers. But the real explosion happened in the 1980s under military regimes. Politicians, in partnership with some school authorities and lecturers, armed certain students with weapons. Their aim? To destabilize and crush the independent student union movement that was fighting for democracy and against oppression.

These armed groups were used as political thugs. Petty rivalries over power, women, and influence turned deadly.

Corrupt patronage fueled the fire. What began as confraternities degenerated into mafia-style cults because those in power found them useful for suppressing dissent. That is the origin of the cultism crisis that wrecked Nigerian universities.

Soyinka and the original Pyrates have consistently condemned the violence. The group even withdrew from campuses in 1984 to distance itself from the emerging madness. Blaming a 1952 idealistic club for the armed gangsterism of the military era is not just wrong, it’s lazy historical illiteracy.

If you must blame anyone for cultism in Nigeria, point your fingers at the military dictators and political figures who ruled in the 1980s. They weaponized youth for power. They turned campuses into battlegrounds. They prioritized control over education.

Not knowing the difference between the original confraternity (a rebellious anti-elitist fraternity) and the violent cults that politicians enabled says a lot about the quality of discourse, and education we have today.

Note: This is not about defending Professor Soyinka. The man doesn’t need my defense. This is about correcting the record because too many people prefer convenient scapegoats over uncomfortable truths. Nigeria’s problems deserve honest diagnosis, not some X (Twitter) myths or propaganda.

Read history properly. Stop embarrassing yourselves with half-baked takes.

Just like Ronaldo, his fans are also the same. They diminish anything they’re not number one in.

BDOR had meaning when Ronaldo had more.

Golden boots had meaning when Ronaldo had more.

International trophies had meaning when Ronaldo had more.

World Cup had meaning when both of them never won it. All of a sudden, Messi wins it and it didn’t have meaning again because 400+ players have won it.
