My Son, I Still Remember Your Weary Hands
On this day, we were besieged inside Al-Shifa Hospital, and we had to bury our martyrs with our own hands. We dug a grave in the hospital courtyard, in front of the Specialties Building—the building that still stands as a witness to the occupation’s crime, and to the days when we were forced to dig graves in the very place we had come to save lives.
My son Abdullah was beside me, digging and carrying the dead, exhausted by hunger, relentless work, and the weight of the bodies we were laying to rest. I looked at him and thought: my son has grown up bearing grief that overwhelms adults and turns children’s hair grey. How I wished I could carry that exhaustion for him and spare his heart a memory he would bear for years.
My son, I still remember your weary hands, and your face, drawn with hunger and exhaustion. You kept working, while I watched through the eyes of a father wishing he could protect his son from this scene. Then I would join you again to carry another martyr.
My anguish for you mingled with my grief for our martyrs. We carried them in our arms, trying to preserve the dignity of their farewell amid siege, hunger, and fear. Each had a name, loved ones waiting for them, and a life they deserved to finish living.
The occupation showed no mercy to our children, our frail elderly, or our mothers’ hearts. Even the bodies of our martyrs were not spared: it seized them after we had buried them, denying their families even a grave they could recognize and stand beside.
This is the ugly face of the occupation, however much it adorns itself with the language of democracy and ballot boxes. Genocide, the burning of hospitals, the starvation of civilians, and the violation of the dead will remain a stain on its history that no speech can erase.
Al-Shifa will remain a witness, as will our hands that dug those graves. And you, my son, will always bring back the ache of that day: I saw your exhaustion, and I could not make the world kinder to you.
