Donald Trump's sweeping attack on mail-in voting just cleared a major legal hurdle, and election officials are scrambling with almost no time left before November's midterms.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that 23 states and Washington D.C. hadn't yet demonstrated sufficient harm to challenge Trump's executive order — a narrow, procedural ruling, NOT a decision on whether the order itself is constitutional. But the practical effect is the same: it clears the path for the United States Postal Service to move forward with implementation, with the agency publishing its final rule late Friday and formally releasing it Wednesday.

Let's be clear about what this executive order actually does. It bars USPS from sending mail-in ballots to any voter not appearing on citizenship lists compiled by federal agencies — agencies with a well-documented history of errors that could wrongly exclude eligible, legitimate voters. It also requires states to send ballots in trackable envelopes, all justified by Trump's persistent, false claims about widespread noncitizen voting — a phenomenon studies have repeatedly shown is exceedingly rare.

Remember, this isn't abstract policy. Trump has spent years blaming "fraud" for his 2020 loss despite exhaustive investigations finding none. Now he's using that same debunked narrative to justify sweeping new restrictions on how tens of millions of Americans cast their ballots, timed with surgical precision right before a critical midterm election that will determine control of Congress.

Election officials are already sounding alarms about the sheer logistics involved. States now face looming deadlines to begin sending absentee ballots, and many would need to replace envelopes, retrain staff, and overhaul entire mailing systems in a matter of weeks, not months.

And this fight isn't even over. The case now heads back to lower courts, and a key part of Trump's order remains blocked pending resolution of separate litigation. But with the clock ticking toward November, every day of legal uncertainty makes it harder for election officials to actually prepare, and easier for confusion, delays, and disenfranchisement to take root.

This is exactly the kind of chaos critics warned about from the start: manufacture a crisis using false claims, then exploit the resulting confusion to make voting harder for millions of Americans, right when it matters most.

It’s painfully obvious that Trump doesn’t give a rat’s ass about democracy and ensuring that every citizen has their voice heard. All he cares about is retaining power and staying out of jail. The Supreme Court just enabled him once again.

And you wonder why those not in the oligarch class believe that the system is rigged against them?
