As citizens, we have the right and responsibility to express our opinions on our government and public officials.
The Senate’s and House’s passage on third reading of the bill setting a 5-year term-limit for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials effectively postpones the BSKE set for November this year. While concerns on continuity of progress and development are always valid, the reality on the ground paints a different picture. The people want to have the elections to democratically hold accountable underperforming, incompetent, and corrupt Barangay and SK officials, whose work most directly affects our everyday lives, through the polls.
If a three-year or four-year term so greatly fails continuity, why does the Constitution explicitly provide for a three-year term for local officials?
Instead of having the people file a report or case against underperforming and corrupt officials, why not simply allow the people to exercise our right to suffrage to reward functioning and effective officials through re-election and vote out erring officials?
On this issue, we express our disappointment. We call on the Senate and our other government institutions to protect and preserve our Constitutionally-guaranteed rights and uphold justice and accountability in their operations and decisions.
