As exchange rate moved, we kept wages at same level as a country and that did us major disservice. You would finish youth service in 2008 and your salary would be ₦300,000 in Kaduna at $1/N140. Minimum wage needs to move significantly so that at least regular people can breathe!

Anytime I come back to Nigeria after staying away for months, in the first few days, I’ll see all the faults in our system. From the airport, to the road users, to the everyday people, to the trash along the road, to the poor drainage system, to the unkempt environment, to the epileptic power supply, to the generally accepted madness.

However, after a period, I’ll stop noticing those glaring abnormalities. Not because they have stopped existing, but because they are now normal to my eyes. That is why it may be difficult to explain our abnormal system to Nigerians living in Nigeria.

A defining feature of capitalism is not simply the pursuit of wealth, but the systematic transformation of wealth into productive capital: money is continually reinvested to generate more wealth and expand productive enterprise.

Historically, this helps explain an important difference between wealthy industrialised (and industrialising) economies and poorer developing ones. In the former, elites have generally been better able to transform wealth into productive capital through investment in commercial enterprise, while in the latter a larger share of wealth has often been directed toward consumption, prestige, patronage, political power, or other forms of asset preservation.

This difference is not simply a matter of mindset. It reflects the presence–or absence–of institutions that enable wealth to become self-expanding capital: secure and transferable property rights, enforceable contracts, banking and financial systems, corporations, and capital markets that channel savings into productive investment. These institutions do not guarantee prosperity, but without them sustained capital accumulation is far more difficult.

Furthermore, capital doesn't grow simply because it exists. It needs somewhere productive to go and people capable of using it effectively. A $500 laptop is a depreciating consumer good in most hands; in the hands of a skilled programmer or entrepreneur, it becomes productive capital capable of generating wealth many times its original value.
