The Actuarial Profession: What is it really all about?

Most time I introduce myself as an actuarial consultant, I usually end up explaining what an actuary is. Not complaining, it comes with the territory 😄

Earlier this year, @SOActuaries did a street interview on "Who is an actuary?" in New York (see the short below)

The responses were hilarious:
-Sanctuary
-Animal scientist
-Something like a church word
-A type of bird
-It’s a big word… energetic

But behind the confusion is a profession that’s actually one of the oldest, most technical, and most respected in global finance.

For context,
· Institute of Actuaries (UK) was established in 1848
· Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (oldest accounting body) was established in 1854
· CFA Institute was established in 1947

Fun fact, the actuarial profession originally supplied most of the investment analysts into the financial system prior to the establishment of CFA. Everything from financial mathematics to valuation theory to quantitative risk, all existed in actuarial training long ago

And yes, actuaries remain one of the highest paid career in Nigeria and globally, with fast, exam driven career progression and unmatched job security.
