Eric’s party organized by The Lions Club for the homeless, an annual event held at the GPO, was scheduled for this week. However, due to the red weather alert, the event was cancelled. While the event is typically ticketed, many homeless individuals arrived unaware of this and we saw a significant influx of attendees, who arrived expecting to attend. Managing the crowd was challenging, but with patience, we were able to keep things under control, even though tensions were high.

Many people were desperately asking for tents and sleeping bags. As we moved down the line distributing hats and gloves, we saw firsthand how severe the cold was—people’s hands were frozen to the bone. To provide some comfort, we handed out pastries and hot drinks while they queued, but the need was overwhelming. Young people in particular approached us, seeking tents and warm supplies.

Regarding the government’s plan to ensure no rough sleepers would remain on the streets during the red alert, the reality was starkly different. A young man approached us, shivering, after spending the night in an alleyway with only a sleeping bag. He explained that he had called the free helpline, only to be told that, because he was registered to a hostel in Kildare, he needed to return there. He had no money or means to get there, and his request for a bed in the city was denied. This heartbreaking encounter reflects the true challenges faced by the homeless. We were able to give him a tent, a sleeping bag, warm clothing, and hygiene supplies for the night.

Despite the city being quieter than usual, we distributed nearly 300 hot meals—thanks to donations from restaurants, though many were closed due to the weather. By the end of the night, we had run out. The need wasn’t limited to food; families, elderly individuals, and rough sleepers also sought other essentials.

We want to express our deepest gratitude for your support. As our volunteers head home tonight to the comfort of warm houses, the contrast is devastating. It’s heartbreaking that, in this day and age, so many are still sleeping on the streets. Your continued help is what makes our work possible. Thank you for standing with us to make a difference.
