The Treasury Department's top tax official just got fired for one reason: he warned the White House they were about to break the law.

Section 7217 of the IRS Code says the president can’t request that the IRS audit or investigate anyone. It’s been law since Watergate.

Kenneth Kies, the Treasury’s assistant secretary and acting IRS chief counsel, told White House officials a proposed request would violate it.

And what did they do? They forced him out.
