Some parents judge schools by the test scores. But there are a lot of parents who judge schools by the attitude of their child when they get home in the afternoon. We need to be working to raise student achievement… but we also need to be creating good experiences for kids.
I think most teachers are looking for support before they are looking for “instructional leadership.” When administrators understand this... and when they provide that support... I think they find that teachers will follow their lead.
I regret those times that I passed a student in the hallway and didn’t really acknowledge them. We should never be too busy or too distracted to acknowledge a kid.
Just as the world is big enough to hold many great people, your school is big enough to hold many great teachers. Choose to be inspired rather than being jealous!
I don’t think there are many people who wake up with a goal of doing a poor job at work. Most people are doing the best job they know how. It is the leader’s job to take people where they are… and give them the tools, resources, training, and encouragement they need to grow.

First Day of school. I’m just as nervous as the kids. My motto for MSE this year is “we have come to far to only come this far.” #epic#mseteach#mse#bestyearyet
Some kids are gonna need extra help with their work this year … just like some teachers are gonna need extra help figuring out how to change their computer login. We all appreciate the patience of those around us. And sometimes... we all need others to cut us some slack.
5 tips for building class climate:
1)Talk to kids when they walk into class.
2) Learn 1 thing about each student.
3) Praise publicly and criticize privately.
4) Apologize when needed.
5) Don’t take yourself too seriously.
It’s good to be teaching your students the curriculum, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. But don’t forget to teach your students to have a good handshake, to look people in the eye, and to be considerate of others. In the long run, those things might matter more.
