Mandolin's iconic riff on "Losing My Religion" came about almost by chance. Peter Buck had just bought a cheap instrument to learn and recorded himself practicing while watching television. When he listened to the tapes afterwards, he found in the middle of the practice takes exactly the sequence that would become the base of the track.
Warner Bros. was hesitant to release the song as a lead single. The track sounded different from anything the band did until then: more atmospheric, conducted by Mandolin, and there were long internal discussions until the label approved. No one in the band expected it to become the biggest success of their career.
Losing My Religion peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, the best position in R.E.M. history in the United States and its only Top 5. It spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Alternative Songs in 1992, winning two Grammys.
The video, directed by Tarsem Singh, won the VMAs for Video of the Year in 1991.
The good old days. Phil Collins was 38 years old then, Eric Clapton was 6 years older, playing the guitar, it brings a tear to the eye.

At the time of recording "Beauty & the Beast" (1991), Celine Dion was actually considered an "up & coming" singer. Disney was concerned she may not have been a "strong enough" pull to do the song alone. They asked the seasoned and well-known R&B star, Peabo Bryson to sing the duet along with Celine. It became a massive hit and it would also win them a Grammy for the song.
Peabo Bryson & Celine Dion truly gave us one of the most magical Disney theme songs of all time with "Beauty & the Beast". Peabo's signature sound and soothing tones will definitely be missed, but never forgotten.
Neil Diamond wrote "I'm a Believer" in 1966, and The Monkees recorded it for their second album, More of The Monkees. The song captured the 1960sโ sense of possibilityโlove and hope.
