The New World Screwworm, a grave parasitic threat, has just been detected in US cattle for the first time since it was eradicated in 1966.
The parasite's revival comes after Trump and DOGE slashed funding for Screwworm monitoring programs.
A Hammond stadium is likely to direct more fan spending to Chicago hotels, restaurants, and clubs than Arlington Heights would, while offering targeted development/transit upside for the South Side. It’s the better deal for Chicago’s broader economy in this unfortunate 'soap opera'!
(studies support this point of view, taking into account distances, current fan patterns, and project details—not guarantees, but good evidence.)
Very funny subsect of people who are mad at the state of Illinois for having taxes and simultaneously mad the state didn’t bailout a billion-dollar franchise with their tax dollars.
@BearKoolaid@dabearsblog Lol they’ll benefit Chicago - people will still fly into Chicago airports, stay in Chicago hotels, eat at Chicago restaurants. The city will reap the lions’ share of the economic value while Indiana gets the bill
@GoldandBurner@October1859@AmusedCynic1982@FlowsAndolini None of this matters. They’re building it in Chicago’a shadow as close to the border as possible - people will still fly to Chicago airports, stay in Chicago hotels, eat at Chicago restaurants. The city will reap the lions’ share of economic value while Indiana gets the bill lol
@JJeffrey100@aaron_renn They’re not losing $200M/yr. for 8 games lol. Opposing fans will still fly into Chicago airports, stay in Chicago hotels, dine in Chicago restaurants.
Indianapolis, the largest city in a state with a metro population of 2.2 million, gets just three trains per week, yet that same state is willing to spend $1 billion on a football stadium for 8 events a year.
@landon20s Indiana is a right to work state that tramples unions, pays its teachers dirt, has the highest cost of childcare to income in the country, ranks 48th in quality of life rankings - but at least they’ll have TWO taxpayer-funded multibillion dollar stadiums for 8 games a year 👍
@sfrr024@deans2beans@cornoisseur I believe building a sports stadium as close to the state border as humanly possible, in the shadow of a major metropolitan city gives the game away.
They know everyone’s going back to the city once the 12-20 events a year are over. Glad it’s not coming out of my pocket though.
