A massive new study tracked 10,893 adults aged 70+ for years.
Researchers discovered a powerful connection between music and brain health. 🧠🎶
Here’s what they found: 👇
1️⃣ Listening to music “all the time” cut dementia risk by 39%.
People who regularly listened to music were MUCH less likely to develop dementia than those who rarely did.
Quantity matters. 🎶🎶🎶
2️⃣ Music also reduced cognitive decline, even without dementia.
Frequent music listeners had a 17% lower risk of cognitive impairment without dementia (CIND).
That means:
- Better memory
- Clearer thinking
- Improved brain health
3️⃣ Playing an instrument helped too.
Those who played an instrument had a 35% lower dementia risk.
Interestingly:
❌ It didn’t help as much with cognitive function.
✅ But it still protected the brain.
4️⃣ The real power came from combining both.
Those who both listened to and played music had the best results:
- 33% lower dementia risk
- 22% lower risk of cognitive decline (CIND)
5️⃣ Memory and global cognition were better preserved.
Regular music listeners had better long-term memory and scored higher in global cognitive tests.
And here’s the kicker: 👇
These benefits held up even after adjusting for:
- Education level
- Other factors
- Lifestyle
In other words...
The benefits were basically universal. 📈💪
And there are VERY FEW medicines that can claim that!

Music is more than just entertainment... it’s literally cognitive medicine.
