Am I My Brothers Keeper?
(The Story of Abel and Cain)
The story begins just outside Eden. Adam and Eve had been driven from the garden after eating the forbidden fruit. Paradise was behind them, and life now meant hard work, pain, and toil.
Then came a new beginning. Eve gave birth to her first son and named him Cain, saying, "With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man." Later she gave birth to his brother, Abel.
The brothers grew up and took different paths. Cain worked the ground, growing crops from the soil God had cursed. Abel became a shepherd, keeping flocks of sheep.
"In the course of time," both brothers brought an offering to the Lord. Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground. Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions, the very best he had.
God looked with favor on Abel and his offering. But on Cain and his offering, He did not look with favor.
Why? Genesis doesn't fully say. But notice: Abel gave his firstborn and finest. Cain simply gave "some."
The New Testament fills in more. Hebrews 11:4 says it was "by faith" that Abel offered a better sacrifice. The issue wasn't just what was on the altar. It was what was in the heart.
Cain didn't take it well. He became very angry, and his face fell. Jealousy and resentment began to take root against his younger brother.
But God didn't abandon him. He came to Cain personally and asked, "Why are you angry? Why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted?"
Even here, God offered him a way back.
Then came the warning: "If you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."
Sin pictured like a predator waiting to pounce. Cain still had a choice.
The first death in the Bible was a murder. Brother against brother.
Then God spoke again: "Where is Abel your brother?"
God already knew. Just like He asked Adam "Where are you?" in the garden, He was giving Cain a chance to confess.
Cain lied. "I don't know," he said. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
No remorse. No confession. Just a cold dodge that's become one of the most famous questions ever asked.
"What have you done?" God said. "The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground."
Abel was silenced, but his blood still spoke. Injustice doesn't go unseen by God.
Then came the judgment. "Now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood." When Cain worked the soil, it would no longer give him its strength.
The farmer could no longer farm.
And he would be "a restless wanderer on the earth." No home. No roots. Driven from the land and from God's presence.
Finally Cain broke: "My punishment is greater than I can bear!" He feared being driven out, hidden from God's face, and killed by anyone who found him.
Notice: he grieved the consequences, not his sin.
And yet God showed mercy. He said anyone who killed Cain would suffer vengeance sevenfold. Then He put a mark on Cain so no one who found him would strike him down.
Even the first murderer was not beyond God's protection.
So Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. "Nod" means "wandering." He settled, yet he never truly found rest.
There Cain had a son named Enoch and built a city, naming it after him. His line produced herdsmen, musicians, and metalworkers, but also Lamech, a violent man who bragged about killing.
The violence of Cain carried on.
And Genesis says it was in Seth's day that "people began to call on the name of the Lord." Through Seth's line would come Noah, Abraham, David, and ultimately Jesus.
Centuries later, Jesus Himself spoke of "the blood of righteous Abel." And Hebrews 12:24 says Jesus' blood "speaks a better word than the blood of Abel."
Abel's blood cried for justice. Jesus' blood cries for mercy.
God cares about the heart behind what we give.
Unchecked anger and jealousy leads to destruction.
No more will I fade away from Him and truth!
He has given me free will and a path to choose.
I FEAR NOTHING AND NO ONE BUT HIM!
The all merciful glory of God!
THE BOOK OF ENOCH - The Entire Story
The Book of Enoch is one of the most controversial texts ever left out of the Bible. Written more than two thousand years ago, and said to have been composed by the ancient scribe Enoch, the only man in the Book of Genesis who never died, it tells of a world before the flood, when two hundred rebellious angels abandoned heaven to take human wives, when their monstrous offspring, the giants known as the Nephilim, ravaged the earth, and when a single man was carried to the ends of creation and shown things no other prophet had ever seen.
Rejected by the early Christian church in the fifth century and lost to the western world for over a thousand years, the Book of Enoch was recovered by chance in the eighteenth century in the mountains of Ethiopia, where it had been preserved by the Ethiopian church since the fourth century. Its authenticity was finally confirmed in 1947 with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, where eleven separate manuscripts of the book were found among the ruins, the oldest of them written two centuries before the birth of Christ. In this video, we tell the entire story of the Book of Enoch from beginning to end.
The fall of the Watchers. The rise of the Nephilim. The great flood that was sent to wipe them from the earth. The journeys of Enoch to the ends of the world, to the mountain of the dead, and to the throne of God himself. And the extraordinary history of how a book left out of the Bible was lost, rediscovered, and finally returned to the world.
