#IRREECHA2017
Irreecha is a significant cultural & religious event for the Oromo people, celebrated annually at the beginning of Birraa (Spring), marking the end of the rainy season and the beginning of a new harvest season. Irreecha is recognized for its profound cultural, spiritual, and communal significance among the Oromos who give thanks to Waaqa for blessings received in the past year, and prayers are offered for peace, reconciliation, and prosperity in the coming times.
This year’s Irreecha will be celebrated on the 5th of October at Hora Finfinnee and 6th of October at Hora Harsadi. As a major cultural and spiritual gathering, where millions gather to celebrate in traditional attire, participate in songs, dances, and rituals, Irreecha reinforce Oromo identity, history, and values. It's where the Oromos expresses gratitude for surviving the rainy season and for the coming of Birraa. This season of the year is also a time when Oromo promotes peace, unity, and reconciliation, not only among the Oromo but also invites participation from other ethnic groups, emphasizing a message of national unity and cultural exchange.
Irreecha is now celebrated globally; as Oromo diaspora community and their friends celebrate it at a global level highlighting its role in maintaining and promoting Oromo culture, serving as a beacon of cultural pride and resilience. Irreecha, therefore, not only marks a seasonal change but also stands as a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit, cultural depth, and communal bonds of the Oromo people, drawing global attention to one of Africa's most celebrated cultural and religious events.
