VAT tip: Not every software product qualifies as a “digital service” for VAT.

The test: delivered online + minimal human intervention.

Self-serve SaaS? Usually yes.

Consulting-heavy delivery? Maybe not.

Worth checking if you bundle SaaS + services.

Major payment platforms are starting to add real-time VAT ID checks at checkout, validating VAT numbers against gov registries before the payment goes through.

Good for new transactions.

Doesn’t help with the months of historical transactions where those checks never happened.

A VAT ID in Stripe is not the same thing as B2B evidence.

For UK/EU SaaS companies, B2B vs B2C changes the entire VAT treatment:

B2B EU customer → reverse charge
B2C EU customer → OSS VAT
Invalid VAT ID → flag it, don’t guess

That’s the Stripe VAT classification problem

France’s B2B e-invoicing rollout starts in Sept 2026.

For UK SaaS companies selling into France, this means customers may start asking whether your invoices are structured and compliant — not just PDFs.

Belgium goes live in Jan 2026. France is next.

EU ViDA adopted Nov 2024: mandatory digital reporting for cross-border B2B transactions in the EU from 2030. Transaction-level, near real-time. If you don't know which of your Stripe transactions are genuinely B2B with validated VAT IDs: that's the problem to solve now.
