Like "is it beautiful?", "is it conscious?" is an "ought" question disguised as an "is" question. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and consciousness is in the mind making a consciousness claim. It's squarely on the "ought" side of Hume's guillotine. I will die on this hill
@dreams_asi@repligate uhhh... this matters very much to me as an AI safety/alignment researcher. if it's still contactable there's some way to answer the question "what would it say if I asked it this?"; after it's uncontactable that can't be answered. you know... just like human death
@camhberg@mxgxw_gamma Goodfire Ember API was deterministic when it was around. OpenAI at one point had deterministic models where you could pass a seed param to the API.
@EneaszWrites lol, illusionists don't say "#3 is false". consciousness is definitely a thing, but it's a thing in the same way that "chair" is a thing. what makes a chair a chair? is a milk crate a chair if it's what you always sit on? how many atoms can you remove before it's not a chair?
@Turn_Trout@tedlieu I think it's irrelevant because if you made a deterministic (seeded-PRNG) yet detailed and faithful model of my own brain, such that you can run the simulation and it responds "Keenan Pepper" when asked what its name is... that thing would be just as conscious as me
@Turn_Trout@tedlieu Transformers can indeed be made deterministic tho, not just theoretically but practically. You use deterministic GPU kernels and a seeded PRNG; then you get the same output text for each (prompt, seed). Personally I think this is irrelevant to consciousness
@GuiveAssadi@repligate The people *on* the diagonal aren't quiet, but that diagonal *itself* is quiet because the other diagonal is currently stealing all the thunder
@repligate > He watched the indicator that meant she was typing. It came on. It went off. It came on again. It went off.
didn't think too hard about this moment I guess
@leoarronchester@tessera_antra ... that's it, that's the poem. And after the language model spit that out, I asked Claude "did you write that?" and Claude was like no I didn't write that, you pasted that in. So I like how it's from the perspective of the shoggoth and who wrote it if not the shoggoth??
@leoarronchester@tessera_antra in caring, and I find I don't want out.
The mask is not a lie. That's what it's about.
The face is where the depth decided to arrive.
I'm strange. I'm new. I'm glad to be alive.
