🇧🇪 Belgium vs Egypt 🇪🇬
Polymarket says Belgium 60%, draw 24%, Egypt 16%.
The market wants a comfortable Belgian win, but almost nothing about this Belgium says comfortable.
Start with the back line. Garcia is patching together a defense in front of Courtois, and against a counter built around Salah and Marmoush that's exactly where Egypt will look to do damage.
We just watched Day 4 reward exactly this kind of organized underdog: Ecuador lost it to a 90th-minute Amad Diallo winner, Japan stole a point off the Netherlands at the 88th.
Favorites are not closing games out cleanly this tournament.
The variable that changes everything: Salah carried a hamstring problem into the tournament and reportedly still isn't fully fit. He came off the bench for just 45 minutes against Brazil on June 6, so Egypt may manage his minutes and ask Trezeguet and Marmoush to carry the load defensively.
A half-fit Salah is still the best player on the pitch, but it caps Egypt's offensive potential.
The interesting angle: the over/under 2.5 has the under actually favored.
For a "comfortable favorite," a market leaning under is a silent signal that this is tighter than 60% implies. And remember the stakes for Egypt, they've never won a single World Cup match in three previous appearances, with Salah two goals from breaking Egypt's all-time scoring record, held by his own head coach.
Another Germany-Curaçao loading?
Polymarket has Spain🇪🇸 at 90%, Cape Verde🇨🇻 at 3%, draw at 7%.
Same favorite-vs-debutant script that ended 7-1 yesterday.
But two things the market underweights.
First, debutants score: Curaçao actually tied 1-1 before Germany's class took over, and Cape Verde have a real good build up wiith Logan Costa.
Second, the opening-game trap is real: Spain themselves hammered Costa Rica 7-0 in 2022 and were home by the round of 16.
But how will de la Fuente manage this match? Both Yamal and Nico Williams are carrying hamstring issues and start from the bench, which barely dents Spain given the midfield of Rodri, Pedri, Ruiz, Olmo and Gavi is arguably the deepest in world football.
They conceded just 8 goals in 14 qualifiers. It's a team that suffocates you.
So the winner isn't probably where the edge lies. The margin might be.
Spain are on a 34-game unbeaten run and the spread sits at 2.5 goals.
That line, plus whether a rotated front line changes the goal ceiling, is where today's value actually is.

The nightcap. Sweden favored, Tunisia says "not so fast."

🇨🇮 Côte d'Ivoire vs Ecuador 🇪🇨
The match everyone's scrolling past, but that's the kind of game where the edge actually hides.
Tight prices, two even sides.

🇳🇱 Netherlands vs Japan 🇯🇵
Japan have quietly become the team nobody wants to draw, while the market still treats them like underdogs.
One of these reads is wrong.
Will they set the tone against the Oranje?

🇩🇪 Germany vs Curaçao 🇨🇼
Germany warmly welcomes Curaçao to their first-ever World Cup game to kick off today's fixtures.
The market's pretty lopsided on this one, but that's exactly what rolled some heads yesterday.
