READ: The Society of Jesus in the Philippines expressed grief over the incident that claimed the lives of Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team members Chukwuemeka Divine Adili and Rene Clert Baterbonia.

In a statement released today, June 12, the Jesuits said that Ateneo leaders had responded to the tragedy by launching an internal investigation and reaching out to the families of Adili and Baterbonia. However, they also acknowledged public criticism, admitting that "more could have been done in the way the tragedy has been dealt with and communicated."

The statement noted that members of the Ateneo community had called on Jesuit institutions to uphold the values they teach, including cura personalis, compassion, social justice, truth, accountability, and solidarity.

"We are grateful for these reminders and for the call to greater fidelity whenever we fall short," the statement read. They added that while they do not always live out these ideals perfectly, they continue to strive to remain faithful to them.

As a response, Provincial Superior Fr. Xavier Olin, SJ, said he had conferred with Ateneo's leadership to examine how the community could "better live out the Ignatian values we teach others."

"We will exert everything in our power to do what is right, what is just, and what is loving for our beloved students Rene, Divine, and their families," the statement read.

READ: Over 163 Ateneo faculty members called on the Ateneo administration to be more transparent and accountable following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

In the statement released today, June 11, the educators questioned whether University regulations and due process were followed in the “team-building activity,” and they also sought clarification on whether parents and guardians had been informed, and what safety measures were in place.

Moreover, they asked whether Head Coach Tab Baldwin and Team Manager Christopher Quimpo’s “leave” are equivalent to a preventive suspension, which they say is “standard operating procedure” in these cases.

The faculty also pressed the administration to explain how it intends to conduct a “independent and impartial investigation” and what measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
