We must not let a “social media ban” become Digital ID by the back door.

A welcoming present just out this morning for a Mr A Burnham to underline just how limited his latitude as PM will be:
The UK government borrowed £23.3 billion last month, 30 per cent or £5.4 billion higher than a year earlier.
It was also more than the £18.8 billion expected by most economists and the £17.7 billion forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK’s independent fiscal watchdog.
The interest payable on government debt rose to £11.7 billion, the highest ever recorded in any May.
⚠️ A “social media ban” sounds like it’s about children.
But the systems behind it would turn age checks into ID checks for everyone.
What starts as age checks would become a system where ordinary people are identified, tracked and monitored just to find information, speak, share and take part online.
Don’t let age checks become Digital ID by the back door.
The open internet has given ordinary people the power to learn, create, organise, challenge those in power and speak freely.
That freedom is now under threat.

Al Carns is absolutely right here 👇
Our veterans in Northern Ireland did nothing but their duty in defeating the IRA terrorists. We cannot now let the IRA achieve their aims through political concessions by persecuting our own soldiers.
This element of the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill must be stopped.
#OTD 17 June 1922, the Altnaveigh Massacre. An IRA unit of 30 rampaged through the South Armagh Protestant hamlet murdering six. Many others managed to escape the attackers by hiding or fleeing. At least twelve houses were burned or bombed. No one was convicted
One uncomfortable consequence of political longevity is seeing the facts prove some of one's most confident forecasts wrong.
As the trade secretary overseeing Britain's entry into the single market in 1992, I claimed it would wonderfully boost our exports. As I outline in my new paper for Policy Exchange, I was proved wrong. Over our 28-year membership, British goods exports to the EU grew less than 1 per cent a year, while our exports to the 111 countries with which we had no trade deal grew four times as much – by 87 per cent.
Yet the present Business and Trade Secretary, Peter Kyle, is apparently ignorant of this disappointing experience. He has justified the government's proposed 'reset' of relations with the EU by claiming that ‘the single market is where the magic happens’.

Au revoir. À bientôt.
Wish I could say I was sad to see you go. But as my dad always said - live by the sword, die by the sword.
You used the sharp edge of politics to punish Brexit voters. Now your own people have used the same edge to send you off.
Lovely. So after another miserable weekend of rail replacement buses, a week of train cancellations due to no drivers, now the trains have decided to need repairs at the same time - truly inept ... @GNRailUK@TLRailUK@networkrail
As a cancer specialist, I’ve never been far from dying patients for nearly 50 years.
My view is that we should definitely create a formal mechanism to support those who wish to end their lives because of incurable illness causing uncontrolled suffering - but this would be actually used extremely rarely, with incredibly tight controls.
But please spare us the excruciatingly ignorant noise that is bound to emanate from the mouths of our politicians, bishops, ethicists and usual commentariat.
Politicians are too ignorant to intervene in assisted dying.
Leave the details to the professionals who actually interact with seriously ill patients.
How to ruin the special relationship.
Just imagine if Donald Trump wins in a few weeks time.
He's then got to deal with Labour's David Lammy who called him a “neo-Nazi sympathizing sociopath" and “a racist KKK and Nazi sympathizer”.
Not only that he will also have to deal with a British Government that sent over an army of activists to stop him winning the election.
This is very worrying indeed.
