One time, I pulled my resident aside after a tough day in regional anesthesia
I asked the same first question I always ask when a trainee is struggling,
“How are you doing? How are things at home?”
The answer is usually, “I’m fine”
This time the answer was “I have cancer”
a sad tweet but,
one of the trade-offs in being a resident is that, in the process of committing ourselves to be healthcare providers, we also learn to detach from other functions, such as, being someone's daughter, friend, etc.
