🚨 Jo Cox, a 41-year-old British Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was murdered on 16 June 2016 outside a constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Thomas Mair, then 52, attacked her with a sawn-off rifle and a knife, shooting and stabbing her repeatedly while shouting phrases such as “Britain first!”, “This is for Britain”, and “Keep Britain independent.” Cox died of her injuries shortly afterwards.

Mair, who had a long-standing obsession with far-right and white supremacist ideology (including neo-Nazi literature and links to American extremist groups), was convicted of her murder and terrorism-related offences. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of release.

The judge and court accepted the killing as a politically motivated terrorist attack by a far-right extremist.

The murder took place one week before the Brexit referendum, and just a few hours after Nigel Farage, then UKIP leader, unveiled the controversial “Breaking Point” poster in Westminster. The poster showed a long queue of mostly non-white migrants and refugees (a 2015 photo from the Slovenia-Croatia border) with the slogan “Breaking Point: The EU has failed us all” and called for Britain to “take back control of our borders.”

It was widely condemned at the time (including by some on the Leave side) for its imagery, which strongly resembled Nazi-era propaganda depicting columns of refugees or “invaders.”

In a 2019 interview with media researcher Emma L Briant, Andy Wigmore, head of comms for https://t.co/9paSsw4iUP (the group behind the poster co-founded by Arron Banks and Richard Tice) admitted the imagery was "inspired by Nazi propaganda" to maximize emotional impact.

The murder and the poster launch both occurred exactly one week before the Brexit referendum on 23 June.

This is Callum Peacock. He battered his girlfriend with a golf club, threw bleach and paint at her, and burned a memorial shirt of her deceased grandmother but has avoided an immediate prison sentence.

The 19-year-old defendant, from St Helens, subjected his partner to a cruel three-hour ordeal inside their home.

Police officers arrived at the flat to find the victim covered in white paint and curled up in a ball on the bathroom floor.

She was audibly sobbing and shrieking through a hole in the door, which was still smouldering and smoking.

During the assault, the teenager hit her with a broom handle and a golf club before putting her in a chokehold from behind.

When she tried to hide in the bathroom, he smashed the door with the golf club and used an aerosol and a lighter to set fire to it.

He then threw dumbbells and a bottle of bleach at her, causing the liquid to splash onto her body.

In what was described in court as an extremely selfish act, he took hold of a memorial t-shirt featuring a photograph of her deceased grandmother.

He set fire to the garment right in front of her while telling her that her nan would rot in hell.

The attack came just two days after another incident where he struck his girlfriend with a hammer following an argument.

Following his arrest, he openly threatened his victim in front of police officers, stating that he was going to smash her face in when he got out.

But he has now walked free from court after a judge handed him an 18-month imprisonment suspended for 18 months.

The court heard he had already spent nearly five months in custody on remand, which the judge noted was the equivalent of a nine-month sentence for a teenager with no previous convictions.

He was also given a five-year restraining order and a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 20 days.

Another kick in the teeth, metaphorically speaking to the brave young woman who endured his cowardly attacks.

The justice in this country cares more about the accused than the victims.

Apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany needed compliant judges to provide a legal veneer to their darkest crimes.

Judge Johnson joins their wretched company. He overturned a jury's conviction of four anti-genocide activists for criminal damage and sentenced them as terrorists instead.

As one their barristers pointed out, the four defendants were initially arrested by police on suspicion of involvement in an act of terrorism. But the prosecution decided not to charge them with terrorism offences because it knew no jury would ever convict them based on the evidence.

Instead the Crown held two trials: a sham one for the jury, and the real one conducted in secret by the judge. That is not justice. It is a show trial worthy of the worst tyrannical regimes.
