Started this as a rough pen sketch on paper, then slowly rebuilt it digitally piece by piece until it became this.💫

I was on Duce at 2am looking for something to write about and found a name I didn't recognize. Dima Kashtalyan. I clicked through to his site and an hour later I'm still there.

Belarusian artist. Started with graffiti. Now based in Warsaw. He's been painting for over 20 years, dotwork, pointillism and stippling, and his client list reads like The New York Times, Harper's Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Lavazza, Vista Jet. He's shown in Taipei, Barcelona, London, Rotterdam, Budapest, Berlin. Solo shows at TingTing Art Space in Taipei and MiaArt Gallery in Wroclaw.

@thebeaksart is his first time bringing any of this on-chain. 1111 pieces. I sat with the artwork for a while trying to figure out what I was looking at. Every piece feels like it's pulling from somewhere you've been but can't name. The precision in the dots is not something you learn in a year. Or five.

I look at a lot of projects. Most of them I close the tab and forget. This one I kept going back to.

The illustrator once tapped by MIT to capture the battle against AI art is now releasing 1,111 hand-drawn creations onto the blockchain.

His name is Dima Kashtalyan.

At 38, living in Warsaw, he has devoted more than two decades to the slowest art imaginable: stippling, pointillism, dotwork. Each piece is built from thousands of patient marks. No shortcuts. No prompts. No erasing without leaving a trace.

I nearly let the project slip by with a flick of my thumb.

It was just another upcoming mint on OpenSea, late on a Tuesday. The thumbnail hinted at a bird, maybe, crowded with marks and too odd to decipher at a glance. I tapped out of curiosity, not expectation.

Then I tumbled down the rabbit hole and lost an hour to it.

Most NFT projects do not survive an hour of reading.

This one did.

In November, MIT Technology Review ran a long feature on Ben Zhao and Nightshade, the data-poisoning tool built to help artists fight back against AI scraping.

The illustrations were by Kashtalyan.

I don’t want to overstate that. MIT commissions plenty of strong illustrators. One assignment does not make a career.

Yet there is something uncannily fitting about it: an artist whose painstaking, hand-drawn process stands in stark contrast to generative art, chosen to depict the struggle against machine-made images.

It is like discovering the person who designed the lock also invented the alarm.

And the MIT piece is not an outlier.

That detail kept pulling me back.The career existed long before the mint page appeared.

The Beaks is more than a project; it’s a showcase of real voice and authentic storytelling. Kashtalyan’s meticulous world shaped by stippling and pointillism, infuses each hand-drawn creature with personality and narrative depth. Kashtalyan’s artistic legacy is visible in every detail, setting the collection apart with a fresh, memorable angle.

1,111 hand-drawn beings: beaked, alert, uncanny, and expressive. Surreal yet precise. Animals behaving impossibly. Objects twisting in ways reality never allows.
They do not resemble generator avatars cobbled together from shuffled traits.
They feel like true characters.

That distinction matters because Kashtalyan’s process rejects instant abundance. Stippling is so painstaking it borders on absurdity until you witness it. You begin, dot by dot, and after an hour, the image barely exists. Gradually, density gathers. Shapes emerge. The subject materializes, almost as if conjured from patience itself.
Each dot is a deliberate choice.
This is not marketing speak. You can see it in every piece.
What I also like is what the announcement does not have.

No utility roadmap.
No staking.
No fake urgency.
No brand partnership that sounds like the brand has never heard of it.
No elaborate lore pretending to be a business plan.

Kashtalyan draws upon two decades of artistic expertise as he introduces this inaugural on-chain collection. While the mint price and date remain unconfirmed, the project’s authentic approach and lack of generic NFT marketing create a strong hook for readers and collectors alike. The Beaks stands out for effort, originality, and presentation style, each piece is unique, memorable, and rooted in a legacy of craftsmanship. The project’s reception is supported by Kashtalyan’s proven track record in top publications and major art venues, making The Beaks a collection with genuine audience appeal and creative value.

But when I searched for the usual reasons to be cynical, I came up empty.

The work is real.
The artist is real.
The career is real.

That is a much lower bar than it should be.
