As the Lindsay Clancy trial comes to an end, people are dividing themselves into camps. Some defend her without qualification. Others want her imprisoned forever or even executed. Meanwhile, another family may already be moving toward the same catastrophe.

This could be the moment when we stop fighting over one woman long enough to ask how we keep another mother and her children alive.

Filicide is the word for a parent killing a child. American data collected from 1976 through 2007 found about 500 such killings each year, with mothers responsible for roughly 200. In Canada, at least 1,612 children were killed by parents between 1961 and 2011, averaging about 32 each year. A study in England and Wales identified 342 filicide perpetrators between 1997 and 2006; 297 were convicted, and 45 died by suicide after killing their children.

These are historical studies, not current yearly counts, and these deaths did not all arise from the same circumstances or mental condition. But they make one thing painfully clear: this is not an isolated problem.

The figures are also incomplete. When a parent kills or attempts to kill the children and then attempts suicide, the acts may be recorded in separate systems. Attempted cases are even harder to count. A single family catastrophe can be divided among homicide, child-abuse, suicide, and mental-health statistics. Fragmented records lead to a fragmented understanding of the problem.

That is painfully relevant here. Lindsay encountered doctors, psychiatric providers, hospitals, crisis services, and concerned family members. Different people knew different pieces. She disclosed suicidal thoughts and thoughts of harming her children. Yet Patrick Clancy testified that no one ever told him she should not be left alone with them. The testimony did not reveal one coordinated safety plan that brought the whole picture together.

When suicidal thinking and thoughts of harming children appear together, especially while someone is visibly deteriorating, “Do you have a plan?” cannot be our only line of defense. That family needs an immediate, coordinated evaluation and a concrete plan ensuring that the mother is not left alone with herself or the children until qualified professionals determine that it is safe.

Since 2023, Lindsay has remained at Tewksbury Hospital under structured psychiatric care and supervision. Earlier in her hospitalization, she was placed under one-to-one suicide precautions. Her courtroom appearance cannot tell us her diagnosis, prove that she is stable, or reveal what was happening in her mind in January 2023. But it does remind us that society already knows how to provide intensive protection after catastrophe. The question is why we could not bring that protection together before Cora, Dawson, and Callan were dead.

This is not about joining a pro-Lindsay or anti-Lindsay camp. It is about choosing to protect mothers and children before another family is destroyed.

Somewhere, the children in the next family are still alive. Their mother is still alive. We still have time to reach them.
