@socfemoz Oh I see. The term “sex based right” emerges in the mid 2010s from my understanding although I think the idea that you need legal exceptions to sex discrimination or positive action or positive discrimination/affirmative action in a context of inequality is older maybe.
@socfemoz I think a similar point is made in this lecture by Clare Chambers about the history of sex discrimination law in the UK

@socfemoz If I understand correctly you’re saying the legal default in most jurisdictions is that sex discrimination is illegal for both men & women. And if you want specific rights based on sex you need exceptions to legally prohibited sex discrimination (like in the EA)?
This is counter-productive, authoritarian and chilling. The British state should not be in the business of banning commentators and journalists from entering the country, without compelling reason. Finding their views objectionable is nowhere near enough.

@LateefSaka Are people really complaining about being misracialised? If you look black to me you’re black. I’m not here to be doing mental gymnastics trying to estimate your melanin genetic makeup.
@albieamankona@KemiBadenoch I don’t envy her. My theory is she’s made a political calculation that she must distance herself from her upbringing/background as much as possible to be taken seriously as a politician. Was surprised to hear her speak fluent Yoruba.
New Sheffield Reform councillor Nathaniel Menday has been suspended over historic social media posts.
He reportedly shared photos on X of a Nazi flag with a swastika and an image of Hitler's Mein Kampf.
ITV Calendar challenged him about his views when he won his seat last week.
@OBEhizele Ever heard of polysemy in linguistics? It’s extremely common in all natural languages. Plus as someone else hinted conceptual contestation is pretty common. Lexicographers record shifts in meaning in dictionaries but when a term is politically contested, dictionaries don’t help.
Breaking: Reform has suspended new Sheffield councillor Nathaniel Menday, after further social media posts were uncovered by my colleague @finnsmithjourno for the @SheffieldStar which included a huge photo of a Nazi flag with a swastika on it and a photo of Hitler's Mein Kamf.
Her full name - according to her - is not Suzanne Ashman. It’s Suzanne Ashman Blair. She’s just been appointed head of UK govt-funded Sovereign AI & her father-in-law - Tony - has a ton of skin in…you’ve guessed it, the sovereign AI game.
@matthewlesh@CityAM@tweetfreshwater This question should only be asked at the same time as asking the public which bits of public services they’d be happy for there to be spending cuts.
🚨 NEW: A Reform UK councillor has resigned just days after being elected to Essex County Council
Stuart Prior allegedly said white people are “the master race” with “larger brains” in a social media post
@sheisafairyyy What you call boredom is only so because we are so alienated as a culture drunk on entertainment and have progressively worse attention spans. I believe it was David Foster Wallace that said “bliss lies on the other side of crushing, crushing boredom”.
@TadhgHickey don’t agree with feeding into political polarisation and voters are complicated as human beings & have all sorts of conscious and unconscious feelings that drive their voting behaviour. Still, some are racist & it is paternalistic to pretend otherwise or feel “shame” at this.
@sophwilkinson@owenjonesjourno It doesn’t have to be on their manifesto. They have a majority and are wasting it instead of pursuing an agenda that could truly unite a broader coalition of voters from both the centre and the left.
@mexicola25@leftinista Or Starmer and the Labour Party actually get on with bringing in proportional representation before 2029. It has popular support on centre left/left & can unite a broader coalition of people + Starmer supported it in his leadership election.
@leftinista Not such a bad thing them winning local elections before 2029 as it gives voters a chance to see how badly they run councils. Possible a new leader will persuade a broader coalition for Labour, but also possible labour MPs & a replacement triggers an early general election.
