Repowering our homes with renewable energy could cut our bills by $3000 per year. That's why I just signed #RenewAustraliaforAll's Open Letter calling on the Government to cut our power bills for good with clean energy upgrades. Join me? https://t.co/tTaJZY0p2o
So no one is left behind in the transition to a clean economy, ACOSS is calling on @AlboMP to embed equity, inclusion, & community into the Net Zero Economic Authority Bill. Plus ensure First Nations & community sector representation on the Authority Board #FairFastClimateAction
18 Australian orgs (biz, consumers, enviro, farmers, social) today made a joint statement on the need for climate and energy policy certainty and the importance of our current national targets.

At a time when the national median weekly rent is $627 a week, an increase to rent assistance alone isn't enough to prevent people being forced into homelessness.
3. End new gas connections and phase out sale of gas appliances, supporting people experiencing disadvantage to make the switch.
4. Establish a domestic gas reserve to guarantee domestic supply to meet existing demand rather than opening new fields.
🧵ACOSS is calling on the government to:
1. Increase investment in demand management, energy efficiency, electrification and renewable energy.
2. Increase investment in home energy efficiency, electrification and solar upgrades, prioritising low-income and First Nations Housing
ACOSS is deeply concerned by the government’s Future of Gas Strategy and their commitment to produce more gas and use it beyond 2050. This decision is out of step with Australia’s climate targets and will have damaging consequences on those experiencing poverty and disadvantage.
3/3 The May budget should include further investment in home energy upgrades across all low-income housing types, prioritising First Nations housing, and incentives for states and territories to implement minimum energy efficiency rental standards #FairFastClimateAction
2/3 The NEPS is clear that energy efficiency & electrification are critical to ease cost-of-living pressures & significantly reduce emissions, the NEPS now needs to set targets, mandate disclosure & rental standards, and increase investment, prioritising low-income households.
1/3 ACOSS welcomes the release of the National Energy Performance Strategy (NEPS) as a framework to build on, but significantly more work and investment will be needed to unlock the benefits of efficiency & electrification for people in low-income housing & the broader economy
3/3 ACOSS urges the Government to replace the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) incentive with targeted measures for people on lower incomes, and support more cleaner, accessible, and affordable public, shared and active transport #FairFastClimateAction
2/3The fuel efficiency standards will result in more options and bring cheaper, more efficient cars to Australia’s market, however, people on low incomes will need targeted support to ensure they are not last to benefit #FairFastClimateAction
ACOSS welcomes Govt's Net Zero Economy Authority Bill. The Authority needs to support inclusive community engagement and promote positive outcomes of regional transition for those experiencing disadvantage, in addition to fossil fuel workers, so all benefit #FairFastClimateAction
1/3 While hoping for more ambition, ACOSS welcomes the release this week of legislation to introduce fuel efficiency standards on new vehicles (NVES), as critical to reducing emissions, transport costs and improving health.

The Government's proposals for strong fuel efficiency standards on new vehicles and calls for measures to help people on low incomes access fuel-efficient cars are a welcome step to reducing emissions, transport costs, and improving health.

Heat waves, bushfires, floods, and other climate change impacts are threatening our health and well-being. And people experiencing disadvantage are impacted first, worst, and longest. We need to tackle this issue head on, and renewable energy is a critical part of the solution.
