@ILAToday The more authentic to them, the better. Put writing in the context of experiences they’re going through. It encourages more detail in their writing since it is something that personally relates to them. Lead students to write about what matters to them! #ILAchat

@ILAToday Introduce new creative words by writing them on the board so students can copy and practice - even if that word is a stretch for them. Exposure and experience with writing those new words can lead to a richer vocabulary and improve writing. #ILAchat

@DrKennethKunz This has been the most interesting part of my field placement in 1st grade - reading my kiddos free-write journals! Those creative minds have so much to say about the world around them and how they’re experiencing it! Seen the most growth in those journals. #ILAchat

@ILAToday Research shows that it’s a progression. Students can start at symbol salad but move through the stages. Was able to see a students writing in my field placement go from symbol salad to partial phonetic over the course of these past 2 1/2 months! SO amazing!

@ILAToday Writing in kindergarten and preschool is forming crucial building blocks for later literacy development. The earlier they can put those skills into practice and make those connections, the quicker they’ll be able to work towards newer and more complex skills in literacy.
