My speech at the @Forest_and_Bird Centennial Conference.
"After a bit more than a year in my role as chief Twig and Tweeter, I’m still tiptoeing that line of hope. But I’m also fed up. I’m cross."

🧵 If you're sick of election campaigns based on personality, misinformation, bad selfies and promises that can't be kept...
VOTE Kererū for Forest & Bird's Bird of the Year 2022. We're campaigning on facts.
@mrJeffHowell The same thing happened with Siggi Henry. They were silent during the election, then (from memory, I can't find the image) they photo shopped her into a lab coat for their front page. 🙄
@Ceriphinz@FreeFM89 Lol thanks Paul! I'll put my feet up and enjoy another sweet as council here in Kirikiriroa (well, bar one... 😑 but I've got my eye on him now)
Something else you should do before voting is know what the council does...and the challenges ahead. Thanks to @Ceriphinz and @FreeFM89 you can learn more about @CouncilHamilton here... #vote2022

Can they string a coherent sentence together? Can they elaborate on their campaign claim? Do they even know what the council do? @FreeFM89 have 10min interviews with candidates that you can binge now. https://t.co/FnmKGa5zJI
@CaigerNancy@ThomasWilliammm@Ceriphinz Yup, I think most candidate events are a waste of time. It's preaching to the converted, candidate supporters, and seldom allow time to delve into explaining a candidates claim. @FreeFM89 host 10 min interviews which are way more helpful. https://t.co/FnmKGa5zJI
Concerned about engagement in local govt elections we hear? Turns out allowing 16 and 17 year-olds to vote has been proven to increase turnout and engagement in Scotland and elsewhere. Giving us our human rights is good for democracy too!
@ThomasWilliammm@Ceriphinz We were successful turning voter turnout around last election because the initiatives were community led. I mean, would anyone really vote just because the council said they should?
@ThomasWilliammm@Ceriphinz 10,000 reasons why I'm not surprised at this turnout. I hope the LG reform is 'burn it down' rather than a tweak. We've also been massively failed by councils, who invest in their own comms, instead of communities who educate and organise their own. Sigh.
