John Nelson Darby’s family inherited one of the bloodiest castles in Ireland. Beneath Leap Castle’s infamous Bloody Chapel were hidden chambers filled with human remains, eventually hauled out by the cartload. Its history included murdered priests, poisoned mercenaries, clan assassinations, dungeons, and enough carnage to make the later ghost stories almost unnecessary. Then the Plymouth Brethren moved into the family story, and helped to iron out John Nelson's Dispensational inventions, while he was away in Dublin.

And the weirdness did not stop. Although the killing started long before Darby, the demonic apparitions aren't on record showing up until the Darbys do. In fact, chronologically, the first one on record is from John Nelson himself, who, while visiting the castle as a child, encountered a hooded apparition who came into his room, and only left when the boy said, "Take what you want." He then took it, and disappeared, apparently satisfied. What was taken is anyone's guess.

Afterward, claims of "hauntings" at the castle became commonplace, and well known to family and visitors. Darby's descendants - raised in the Plymouth Brethren and Dispensationalism - then brought séances, "automatic writing," and the Occult into their family home and wrote of the demon they called "the Elemental" who lived there. It became a museum of the Occult, trading Bible studies for demonism. Alistair Crowley isn't the only Satanist to come out of the Brethren.

Today, what started in Dublin and Leap Castle in Ireland, whose roots are in the blood-soaked, corpse-lined dungeons, has grown into an international phenomenon twisting historic Christianity into an inverted caricature of itself.

Darby’s theology eventually escaped the little Brethren world, crossed the Atlantic through Scofield and American evangelicalism, and helped build modern Christian Zionism into a political force capable of moving billions of dollars and American weaponry to a death cult that has soaked its own ground with blood and a nation being built on a pile of dead bodies. The tree of heresy is now fully grown, and its fruit is blood.
