A neighbour of mine is seriously trapped in what she describes as a marriage that feels like captivity.

She said her husband has restricted her from associating with people, including their neighbours. What makes the situation even more concerning is that the man is a deacon in one of the biggest Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

According to her, ever since she got married to this man, there has been constant problem in their home. She has left the marriage twice and returned, partly because of pressure and counsel from the church. She said that, at one point, she and her husband lived in the same house for an entire year without having sex.

Now that she has decided to leave again, she said her husband told her that he had planted people in different places to monitor her movements.

They took the matter to the church, but according to her, the elders advised her to obey whatever her husband says so that they could continue living together as husband and wife.

She also said that even when they are at home, they barely have conversations. Instead, they communicate mainly through messages about what needs to be done.

What worries her most is that whenever she tries to seek help or talk to someone about what she is experiencing, her husband becomes angry and questions why she is telling other people about their private matters.

She says she is tired of the emotional manipulation, control and blackmail she has been experiencing.

At this point, she says she is exhausted and does not know what to do anymore.
