Our priority now must be to build a united front against monopoly capitalism and war, not in words, but in deeds - and to build our Party into the force history requires us to be in the process.

There are no shortcuts in this. It requires hard work at every level of our organisation and from each and every comrade.

Read and study the resolutions individually and in your branches and take them and the politics and strategy they contain out into the movement.

Brexit is trending again and the myth that every bad thing about society in Britain is the result of leaving the European Union is being peddled again, with increasing fanaticism.

Just as dangerously we see again and again the claim that it can all be solved by rejoining the EU. Today the EU is presented as an internationalist bastion of peace and progress.

Britain left the EU more than four years ago, following the largest referendum in our history.

The EU is, was and will continue to be a fundamentally anti-democratic, anti-worker, neoliberal, racist and pro-war bloc. Since it’s inception it was designed this way - to remove power, national sovereignty and local democratic control.

The fight to completely break with the EU was always going to be an incomplete one while the left and labour movement had failed to remove the Tory government. On the same basis, the significant powers reclaimed from unelected EU institutions won’t be used for progressive change until we make advances in the political battle here in Britain.

This propaganda reinventing the EU as a saviour is designed to delude and disarm working people.

Which specific glory days are Europhiles harking back to?

The problems faced by working people in Britain - poverty, unemployment and alienation - are caused by capitalism itself. We faced these while a member of the EU. EU member states face the same crisis as we do in Britain today.

The EU, in its entire history in Britain and across Europe, not only has done nothing to change this, it has been one of the architects of our misery.

Just ask the communities across Britain deindustrialised and impoverished by EU policies. Or ask the peoples of Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain, who have faced crippling austerity to guarantee interest payments to French and German banks. Ask the tens of thousands of migrants allowed to drown in the Mediterranean by ‘Fortress Europe’. Ask the Ukrainian conscripts dying on the frontline holding EU exported weapons or the Palestine children facing Israel’s EU approved genocide.

The Communist Party will continue to work with our allies to oppose all steps towards re-entry into the neoliberal, undemocratic, militarised EU or a European common market designed to protect the interests of the capitalist monopolies rather than those of workers.

We have to carry forward the fight to win power in Britain to actually utilise the reclaimed sovereign powers over public ownership, domestic procurement and investment to realise the potential benefits of Brexit for the peoples of Britain.

We have no time for the defeatist calls to surrender to unelected bureaucrats in Brussels all over again. Our fight is with the ruling class here at home and their bought and paid for politicians in London. Our victory will be in the power we have as the working class.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya, leading Bolshevik Revolutionary and promoter of public education in the early Soviet Union.

Krupskaya was from an impoverished upper-class background; her father was a military officer charged with ‘un-Russian activities’ who found work where he could and her mother was a well educated governess for their rich. Her grandparents on both sides had died while her parents were young, leaving no land or money.

Before reaching her mid-20s, Krupskaya became a Marxist (whose ideas and supporters faced severe repression in the Tsarist Russian Empire) and became friends with Lenin (whom she later married). From an early age, her education as well as her experience of poverty, injustice and indignity of the capitalist system had inspired her to fight for a better life for her people.

She was arrested in 1896 for her activities and eventually joined Lenin in exile in Siberia where they were sentenced for three years. As well as working on translating, publishing and spreading revolutionary ideas throughout Russia and Europe, Krupskaya wrote the key Marxist feminist text The Woman Worker in 1899.

The Woman Worker was a groundbreaking pamphlet, banned after the failed 1905 Russian Revolution, which exposed the situation of women in the Russian Empire, the majority of whom were peasants oppressed and exploited both in the family and at work where they were paid far less.

Krupskaya argued that the woman worker, in order to achieve liberation and break the shackles of exploitation and oppression, must stand shoulder to shoulder with her fellow workers – male and female – and overthrow the capitalist system.

From then on, she played a central role in the organisation of the Russian Social Democratic Labour, predecessor of the Bolsheviks and the Communist Party. She sometimes worked as a teacher. On one occasion, she was sacked after 30,000 factory workers under her tutelage went on strike.

In 1917, the Bolsheviks swept to power. In government, Krupskaya was deputy minister of education. She led the creation of the new Soviet educational and public library systems, as well as the Komsomol (Young Communist League) and the Pioneer (similar to the Scouts) youth movements.

Soviet education guaranteed free high-quality education to all people, no matter their background, and the Soviet Union’s astonishing advancement from backwards semi-feudal society to social, economic and scientific world leader with quality of life for all men and women.

She reformed the Russian Empire’s ragtag libraries into centres of learning that would be accessible to the general public, helping to improve their lives and preserve the values of a more humane, socialist world.

The Komsomol and the Pioneers not only enriched Soviet citizens’ lives with trips, summer camps and other activities, but also contributed to building socialism in the USSR with young people coming together in agricultural, industrial and other practical campaigns.

Krupskaya’s life’s work was in the construction of a superior socialist society, based on human need and cooperation, through which her achievements live forever.
