One small company I used to work at during the holidays had a small boy who lived just behind the place his house was only about ten steps away. He was always around because the boys working there used to give him money or other things especially bread since he ran messages for everybody.

I became fond of him and liked playing with him all the time. I always called him Clinton White because he was light skinned. Since I was the freest and easiest person for him to approach, he would often come to me and ask for bread. I never refused him whenever he asked, which made everyone in his house like me. I became very close to his family, and they all liked me a lot until I left that job.

We started seeing each other again about three years later, during the early COVID-19 period. Sometimes he and his older brother, or sometimes his sister (who was also my friend then), would come to my new workplace before I stopped working there. Sometimes I also went to their new apartment now.

One day Clinton was at my workplace with his brother when he told me what had happened during those three years we hadn’t seen each other. He said his father’s brother, who is a very big man, one day remembered them and connected his dad to opportunities, and that was how their lives changed from nothing to something. He told me that when his father was giving the testimony in their church, his dad mentioned how a boy called Christian back then was always helping them out that sometimes when they didn’t have anything to eat, they would send Clinton to ask me for bread and I always gave it every time no matter the risk of getting caught.

I was stunned when I heard this. I had just been operating on a “what are friends for” energy and didn’t know I was doing more than that. It felt really good to hear something like that I can’t lie and I was glad I had made an impact on a whole family’s life. No wonder they didn’t joke with me and had extreme trust in me back then. It made sense why I was the only guy who could be with Clinton’s sister and her parents would see us and just go back inside. I really liked her like a sister. I used to tell one of my homies, Jossy, “Bro, I don’t have feelings for this girl.” I even tried to assume it or allow it but there was no single feeling attached. I just saw her like a sister.

It’s sad that Clinton is late now. He had an accident. He was still a little kid not even through secondary school. 💔💔
