It's honestly it's own form of woke racism to just ignore that Puerto Ricans have repeatedly voted for statehood, not independence.
People are just way too sincere about the self-effacing white stuff, and it's just bizarre and frankly narcissistic.
It's an unfailing sign of having little if any experience—much less relationships—with non-white people.
I think the west failed to establish a mythos about communism the way they did about fascism. Older generations lived through it, they understood how bad it was, but they failed to pass that down to their children in popular culture.

Cold War 2.0 happened. In recent years, adversarial nation states replaced non-state actors (terrorists) as the USA’s primary security challenge. This means that people who hate the USA are looking to historical state adversaries of the USA for cues to political action (or at least political revenge fantasy).
