BIRTHDAY THINGS...
Finally, I get to start something of an explication of the doctrine of salvation, and something of a response to some of the contortions being peddled against those of us who push back at hypergrace.
To be clear: the problem with hypergrace is not simply the belief in OSAS. Properly qualified, Calvinists believe in OSAS. So the issue is deeper than that. OSAS is just a convenient pretense, a cunning smokescreen with which hypergracers seek to arm-twist the church into ceding them a seat at the table, and thereby bully the bride of Christ into investing hypergrace, even if unwittingly, with legitimacy.
It is in the text that Jesus is the author of "eternal salvation." No Christian should deny that. So, believing in eternal salvation is not the contention. The contention is something as sly as it is sinister. It is the sleight of hand, the sophistry by which hypergrace smuggles aberration into the faith. It is the hermeneutical move that flattens the nuanced landscape of biblical doctrine into a strangulated and sterilized wasteland. The land is lush-green, but hypergrace makes it anemic. At its best, hypergrace would plant a full stop where God, in scripture, ordains a comma or a (semi)colon. These are the issues.
It is a matter of doctrinal responsibility to unpack and clarify them. It is incumbent on those of us burdened with the sacred privilege of teaching to hold up the banner of true witness in this day of Marcion-like maneuvers and empty novelties.
There are easily a dozen critical points of departure in hypergrace – points of departure from the historic apostolic faith we inherited, as it came to us through the godly, faithful testimonies and labours of Prophets, Sages, and Martyrs. The vacated and limp novelties peddled by hypergrace must be identified for what they are. Another gospel! Yes, hypergrace is another gospel – one that is (for instance) reluctant to accept God's unambiguous, personal self-identification as both the God of Love and the God of Justice.
All I intend to do for now is not to lay a finger on every one of the myriad errors at the heart of hypergrace. I want to look at the doctrine of salvation, and use the exercise to refute the faulty soteriology of hypergrace.
You are welcome to join us.
You have every reason to be suspicious of those who aren't loud about their faith.
Especially when they are loud about everything else.
It isn't often just a case of being a silent follower of Jesus; it may actually be a case of being comfortable with lukewarmness.
Lukewarmness that gradually leads to decay and ultimately results in full-blown backsliding.
If people flaunt everything else aside from the allegiance and loyalty to Jesus, you can be sure they don't really rate Him so highly.
To the Church in the North of Nigeria,
To our brothers and sisters in Borno State, Plateau State, Kaduna State, Benue State, Yobe State, and every hidden fellowship where the Name of JESUS CHRIST is whispered through tears.
Grace to you, and peace from GOD our FATHER and from the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
Many of us do not know what it is to hear gunshots while singing hymns.
Many of us do not know what it is to gather for worship not knowing who will return home.
Many of us do not know what it is to bury a husband because he refused to renounce CHRIST.
Many of us do not know what it is to hold a child who asks, “Why did they kill Daddy for going to church?”
But you know.
You know what it is to kneel beside ashes where your sanctuary once stood.
You know what it is to search for familiar faces after the attack.
You know what it is to dig graves with hands still wet with tears.
You know what it is to sing, “It Is Well with My Soul,” while your world is collapsing.
And still you worship. Still you gather. Still you pray.
Still you preach. Still you declare, “JESUS is LORD.”
Beloved, we are undone by your faith.
While many of us in the West, the East, and the South of Nigeria pursue comfort and become distracted by lesser things, you are proving with your blood that CHRIST is better than life.
When your churches are burned, you become living temples.
When your Bibles are taken, the WORD rises from your hearts.
When your pastors are killed, the Gospel is preached by widows, by children, by farmers, by ordinary saints whose only sermon is this:
“CHRIST is worth everything.”
Your tears preach. Your scars preach. Your graves preach.
Your endurance thunders across this nation louder than any conference, crusade, or cathedral.
You are telling all of Nigeria that JESUS CHRIST is not a slogan. HE is a treasure worth dying for.
And so We are ashamed that we have loved convenience more than CHRIST.
We are ashamed that we have feared insults more than you have faced bullets.
We are ashamed that we have complained about small discomforts while you cling to CHRIST in the valley of the shadow of death.
And we are grateful.
Grateful that GOD has raised among us men and women who show us what genuine Christianity looks like.
Grateful that your faith calls us to repentance.
Grateful that your steadfastness awakens sleeping churches.
Our Prayer is LORD, give us Their courage.
Give us Their conviction.
Give us their love for CHRIST.
Give us their willingness to lose everything and still sing. Give us hearts that treasure JESUS above houses, lands, reputation, and life itself.
And for you, beloved sufferers, we pray:
May GOD sit with every widow in the silence of the night.
May CHRIST reveal HIMSELF to every orphan who wonders why this happened.
May the HOLY SPIRIT strengthen every pastor Afraid.
May angels encamp around every village.
May the fields you fled one day be filled again with songs of harvest and praise.
May the blood of the martyrs become seed.
May those who murdered your loved ones be conquered by the Gospel.
May former persecutors become preachers.
May the same grace that transformed Paul the Apostle visit your enemies.
And when you grow weary, remember this:
Every wound will be healed. Every injustice will be answered. Every faithful saint will receive a crown.
The day is coming when no church will burn.
No child will hide in fear. No widow will mourn.
No gun will sound. No terrorist will threaten.
No grave will open except to release the redeemed.
On that day, you will stand before the throne clothed in white.
And the LORD JESUS HIMSELF will wipe away your tears. HE will show you the scars in HIS hands.
HE will call your suffering light and momentary.
HE will place upon your heads the crown of life.
And all Heaven will know that you counted CHRIST worthy. Until that day, stand firm.
When your knees tremble, stand. When your eyes are full of tears, stand.
The problem is not that Christianity is spreading. The problem is that it is spreading without depth.
More people identify as Christians, but fewer actually follow Christ.
We’ve made room for popularity, but not for transformation.
Churches are full.
Events are loud.
Platforms are growing.
But where is the fruit?
Where is the evidence of lives that have truly been changed?
Because if nothing in you has shifted your desires, your priorities, your obedience then Who exactly are you following?
I repent often from my fears after I realize it is embarrassing for God to be on my side and I'm still terrified at satan's threat.
My fear makes Satan feel more influential than God.
My fear tells God I don't trust Him enough!
Let's invest dilligent labour into studying and teaching the word. Sometimes, brethren dress their hermeneutical exceptionalism and/or doctrinal incoherence in the garment of MYSTERY. By appealing to mystery, they seek to absolve themselves from the duty of defending their questionable doctrinal positions.
Appeal to MYSTERY – where clarity, where understanding is possible – is a terrible hush-strategy. Historically and expectedly, it implodes, self-destructs, and creates apostates in the process. Seekers, inquirers turn against God quicker, when they are prohibited from responsible doctrinal probes. However, Faith flourishes more when sanctified-curiosity and sincere, rigorous interrogation of our beliefs are rightly seen as worship. Yes, responsible interrogation of scripture, even when it is uncomfortable, is an act of worship.
Read slowly: While the things and ways of God in scripture are beyond logic, they are neither against nor anti logic. They usually proceed further than/from logic. They don't normally head out against logic, properly considered.

MINISTRY... YOUNGER PEOPLE
Every year, during MiS, we invite an elder to teach and minister to us. We seek to learn from their experience acquired over decades of walking with the Lord. We expect them to tell us a lot of how they've seen God's word play out. Experience.
I see younger ministers trying to do the same a lot these days. I see people starting out in ministry focusing on 'firing people up' to make an impact, or to pray prayers, or to be disciplined. It is very effective, short-term. It may even be some form of spirit-coated motivational exercise unto good works. I get it. But I think it is inappropriate. Leave that work for elders. And do it very sparingly. If you are young, bury your life in the scripture. Exegesis. Hermeneutics. These should be your obsession.
Teach the scriptures. Expound it. Teach it raw. Let stories and illustrations be scanty in your delivery. Aim for naked mastery of the word. No toppings, no garnishing. If you are young, you don't have the breadth and the luxury for that sort of unhinged, even if fiery protocol. Yrs, i know that it is tempting to go that exciting route, because it usually sparks prayer. Young audiences go ga-ga at such deliveries and it might even make you popular. But your soul, your soul, o man of God, will be lean. Your asernal will have petrol, but not rocks. Your word-store will be emasculated, and your doctrine will be flippant and emotional.
You will start to depend on 'inspiration' a lot, and you will start to commit doctrinal blunders frequently.
You may have fire. But you will lack wood to keep that fire burning. Your ministry will spark people, but will hardly ground them. We build with doctrine, unembelished doctrine.
If you are young, leave the elders to 'speak', leave 'talk' for them. If you are young, labour in the word, in doctrine. Let those who hear you be burdened with untempered excavations from the word. Be meaty. Just keep at the word. Stay with scriptures. Let most of your statements be clear explication of the text of scripture before you.
I will say more later. And when I do, I will still end with this paraphrase from a wise man: learn to read the lines before attempting to read between the lines. Till then, stay with the 'lines'.
I just want to say that Apostle Gideon Odoma @gideonodoma is a VERY SOUND teacher of the Word of God. We're so blessed in this generation to have him. Thank you sir for serving such a pure stream to the body of Christ.
If you can stay up all night to watch a favourite series, you can stay up all night to pray.
The reason why it seems easier to do the former than the latter is because prayer was not designed in such a way that the machinations of the human flesh can power it.
If you must pray, you must be helped, particularly because the flesh will actively war against the spirit to ensure you do not pray.
If you are watching a movie late at night you may sense some resistance from your spirit but it is usually not forceful. But when the flesh resists your Spirit you will know it. That is why you cannot pray without the help of the Spirit.
Have you noticed that people usually struggle to stay awake during a night vigil when prayer or bible study is going on but if you were to close the service so that people can sleep, you will notice that half the people who were struggling to stay awake would be wide awake gisting until daylight?
The spirit realm is not accessible to your natural faculties and so you must be helped.
Apart from the infirmity of your flesh, you also are laden with the infirmity of knowledge. So let us assume you are able to take care of the issue of sleep by some natural means so that you can be awake all night, you will still be faced with a whole new difficulty; knowing what to pray for as you ought.
I used to be in a relationship back then and at some point things got really bad that we could be together on a date and there is nothing to talk about. We were both frustrated, people in love should have a natural chemistry such that discussions are not mechanical. But I was the problem, I did not know what to say as I ought. The man who wants to pray would also realize that he is dealing with a Spirit who operates on a very different frequency from him and one who you cannot summon but makes himself known at his time. From the onset the man is heavily disadvantaged.
It is why really the only prayer you can initially pray when you wake up at night is "help me Holy Ghost".
Just keep saying that for 1 hour.
Then for 1 week, Then for 1 month.
Keep your prayer watches. You will see that the Holy Spirit is drawn to a broken and a contrite spirit.
There is nothing that attracts him better than a man who caves to his vulnerabilities before the consciousness of his Divine abilities.
"Help me Holy Ghost" is a valid prayer. Pray it and see how your life will be transformed.
The thing with the prayer is that it can fit into any situation.
Are you mourning? Help me Holy Ghost.
Are you broke? Help me Holy Ghost.
Are you battling an addiction? Help me Holy Ghost.
You cannot pray? Help me Holy Ghost.
You eat too much? Help me Holy Ghost.
You are battling with ungodly telegram channels? Help me Holy Ghost.
See I don't watch mainstream gospels movies o.
The last time I watched a gospel movie was with my wife when we were in courtship. And I don't watch mainstream gospel movies for the same reason I don't listen to mainstream gospel preaching.
So I don't know about the movie at hand and I don't see myself watching it anytime soon.
But o.
The gospel if it's to be preached is the responsibility of saints, not sinners.
It is sinners that need the gospel and it is them it should be preached to.
The thing with the gospel is that it is both complex and simple.
It is both the gospel that saves and the preaching that saves.
So the gospel saves, and the preaching saves.
To preach the gospel you should be anointed to do it.
The unbelievers are not anointed to preach the gospel so they can say the same thing a believer has said and nothing happens.
Have you not seen two people sing the same song and the effect is different?
You people should keep lowering the bar, one day you will ordain Davido as Apostle and say but his name is David.
In 7 days, Clarity's Forge (CF) with Gideon Odoma launches.
CF will simplify complex & heavily disputed issues of faith/doctrine to you. Are there things about Christian doctrine hard for you to grasp? Clarity's Forge aims to address them all.
Excited?
