I am very pleased to have started my new role as acting High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam - and have been given the usual very warm Bruneian welcome!
I look forward to deepening 🇬🇧-🇧🇳 collaboration during my time here, including on education, defence and sustainability.
❌ An earthquake-affected area, where internally displaced people were reportedly sheltering
❌ At least 16 casualties, mostly women & children
❌ The Myanmar Air Force is the only actor in Myanmar with airstrike capability
This cannot continue. All civilians must be protected
Today is Aung San Suu Kyi's 80th birthday.
She will spend today, alongside thousands of other political prisoners, in detention in Myanmar at the hands of the Myanmar regime.
Release Aung San Suu Kyi.
Release all those arbitrarily detained.
The UK is committed to supporting an inclusive and democratic future for #Myanmar.
Our Minister for the Indo-Pacific @CatherineWest1 welcomed discussing this with @HonJulieBishop, UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, in London.
We are appalled to see this evidence of airstrikes by the military regime during their ceasefire and at a time of national disaster
We call for all actors to protect civilians, for unimpeded humanitarian access, and for the military regime to uphold the ASEAN 5 Point Consensus
To date, the UK has provided up to £25 million, with our support reaching over 116,000 people via our local partners.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by this tragedy.

We welcome the temporary ceasefire announcements in Myanmar and expect the military and others to respect these, to stop violence against civilians and allow aid to reach those who need it.

The UNSC is clear - humanitarian aid must reach the most vulnerable following Myanmar’s devastating earthquake.
All parties must allow aid to reach people in need, and humanitarian workers must be protected.
