Meaningful relationships are invaluable for building and sustaining a culture of excellence, because they create the trust and support that people need to push each other to do great things. When I was 25 I was an equities trader and I was fired from the one and only job I ever had!

I went for a job interview at very prestigious equities trading firm and was declined by the head trader, whom in my eyes was a kind of “god” back in the day.

I was broken and angry with him for declining me! I was a white male in South Africa and had no prospects of getting another job!

I saw him at the gym today after all these years. I recognized him
Immediately. He didn’t remember me at all.

I reminded him who I was ( he still did t remember) and thanked him! He forced me into entrepreneurship and in my head I always had to prove him wrong and be bigger than him.

That set off my entrepreneurial journey again. Fast forward, I have since sold a business for $150m and am now building a business that will soon be valued at $1bn!
