In 2005, the UK minimum wage was £5.05 an hour and a Freddo cost 10p. So one hour of work could buy you roughly 50 Freddos.

Fast forward to 2026. The minimum wage is now £12.71, but a Freddo is around 39p.

That same hour of work now gets you just 33 Freddos.

Your wage has gone up around 152%.

The price of a Freddo has gone up 290%.

If wages had risen at the same rate as Freddos, the minimum wage would be almost £20 an hour.

Yes, I'm measuring the state of the UK economy in chocolate frogs.

But that's the point. Everything keeps getting more expensive while wages struggle to keep up, and too many people are working full-time and still finding it impossible to get ahead.

Something has gone seriously wrong.
